Munich Airport witnessed a significant uptick in its operational metrics during 2023, as evidenced by its latest traffic data. The airport welcomed 37 million passengers, a substantial increase of 5 million from the previous year. This surge brought the airport’s passenger count to approximately 80% of the peak volume observed in 2019, before the downturn. The number of flight operations also saw a rise, with over 300,000 take-offs and landings recorded, marking a 6% increase from 2022. Notably, the airport achieved an unprecedented seat load factor of 81.3%, surpassing the 80% threshold for the first time since its inception.

A notable aspect of 2023’s growth was the emphasis on passengers commencing or concluding their journeys in Munich, which saw a remarkable 22% rise compared to the previous year. The segment of transfer passengers, crucial for the airport’s role as a hub, experienced a robust growth of 11%.

Munich Airport now boasts connections to 219 global destinations across 64 countries, reestablishing its strong position in the global aviation network. In 2023, it was serviced by 99 different airlines, including nine dedicated exclusively to cargo flights.

Flughafen München GmbH’s CEO, Jost Lammers, commented on the impressive growth in passenger traffic in 2023, highlighting it as a testament to the recovery and robust demand in the global aviation sector in Munich, both from general consumers and business travelers.

Additionally, the airport saw a positive trend in its air freight operations, with a 7% increase in cargo volume, reaching approximately 280,000 metric tons in 2023.
