In 2026, Moldova had the most tourist growth in Europe. A 25% increase in tourists was caused by many people from Ukraine and Romania.

The first half of 2026 brought a boom in international tourism to Moldova, one of the best tourism performing countries in Europe. Moldova has enjoyed a larger number of international visitors in the first half of this year, compared to the same period in 2025. Stimulated by the growing recognition of the country’s cultural and natural attra aud offerings, international visitors have rediscovered rural and other tourist attractions.

According to the latest World Tourism Barometer released by UN Tourism, Moldova registered a 25 per cent increase in international tourist arrivals between January and June 2026, marking the highest growth rate recorded among European destinations during the period. The strong performance placed Moldova ahead of several established European tourism markets and highlighted the country’s expanding role on the continent’s travel map.

While Moldova experienced a major rise in visitor numbers, other European destinations also reported positive momentum. Greece and Ireland each recorded a 15 per cent increase in international tourist arrivals during the same period, demonstrating continued recovery and expansion across Europe’s tourism sector.

Globally, international tourism continued its gradual growth trajectory, with worldwide arrivals increasing by 0.4 per cent in the first six months of 2026. Europe performed better than the global average, registering a 3 per cent rise in international visitors as travellers continued to explore destinations across the region.

Moldova’s Domestic Tourism Data Confirms Strong Visitor Growth

The latest national tourism statistics also reflect Moldova’s expanding appeal among international and domestic travellers. During the first six months of 2026, accommodation establishments across the country hosted 257,300 tourists, representing a 15.8 per cent increase compared with the same period of the previous year.

International visitors played a major role in this growth story. Non-resident tourists accounted for 159,600 arrivals, representing approximately 62 per cent of all tourists accommodated in Moldova during the period.

The increase was recorded across different categories of accommodation facilities, showing that tourism growth was not limited to one segment of the market. Hotels and motels experienced the strongest expansion, welcoming more visitors with a 23.9 per cent increase in accommodated tourists compared with the previous year.

Tourist guesthouses and agritourism properties also benefited from rising demand, registering a 10.9 per cent increase. Meanwhile, health and wellness facilities recorded a 7.3 per cent rise, indicating growing interest in wellness-focused travel experiences and alternative tourism products.

The figures demonstrate that Moldova’s tourism sector is gradually diversifying, with travellers increasingly seeking not only traditional sightseeing opportunities but also rural tourism, local experiences, wellness stays and authentic cultural encounters.

International Visitors Drive Moldova’s Tourism Momentum

The growth in foreign tourist numbers highlights Moldova’s increasing visibility among global travellers. The country has been attracting visitors from a wide range of international markets, with neighbouring countries continuing to represent a significant share of arrivals.

Among non-resident tourists staying in Moldova’s accommodation establishments, citizens of Ukraine and Romania formed the largest visitor groups. Their proximity, transport connections and regional travel links have contributed significantly to Moldova’s international tourism activity.

Beyond neighbouring markets, Moldova has also attracted visitors from countries including the United States, Italy, Germany, Türkiye, Israel, Poland and the United Kingdom. The diversity of visitor origins reflects the country’s expanding international reach and growing recognition as a destination offering unique European travel experiences.

Moldova’s tourism appeal is built around a combination of historic attractions, wine tourism, traditional villages, natural landscapes and cultural heritage. The country’s reputation as a destination for authentic experiences has continued to strengthen as travellers look beyond Europe’s most established tourism centres.

Overnight Stays Increase as Travellers Spend More Time in Moldova

Alongside the rise in tourist arrivals, Moldova also recorded growth in overnight stays during the first half of 2026. The total number of overnight stays in accommodation facilities reached 679,900, representing a 4.6 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2025.

The increase suggests that visitors are not only arriving in greater numbers but are also spending more time exploring the country. Longer stays create additional opportunities for local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, wineries, tour operators and rural tourism providers.

The growth in overnight stays also supports Moldova’s efforts to strengthen its tourism economy by encouraging travellers to discover multiple regions rather than focusing only on short visits to major attractions.

As international demand grows, the country has an opportunity to further develop tourism routes connecting cultural landmarks, natural attractions, wine regions and rural communities.

Moldova Focuses on Tourism Investment and Destination Development

The latest tourism results underline the importance of continued investment in Moldova’s tourism infrastructure, destination marketing and visitor experiences. Authorities are working to strengthen the country’s position in the international tourism market by improving accessibility and creating new products designed for both domestic and foreign travellers.

The country’s tourism development strategy focuses on enhancing the quality of tourism services, promoting Moldova’s unique attractions and encouraging investment in destinations across the country.

Future growth is expected to depend on continued improvements in infrastructure, stronger international promotion and the development of innovative tourism experiences that match changing traveller preferences.

Moldova’s growing tourism performance in 2026 highlights how emerging European destinations are gaining greater attention from international visitors. With increasing arrivals, expanding accommodation demand and a wider global visitor base, the country is building momentum as a destination offering authentic and memorable travel experiences.

The latest figures show that Moldova is moving beyond its traditional role as a lesser-known European destination and becoming an increasingly visible choice for travellers seeking culture, nature, heritage and unique local experiences.
