Norwegian Cruise Line is preparing to introduce a new generation of cleaner and more efficient cruise operations by installing Series 2 turbocharger silencer filters from NorthWest Clean Air Company (NWCA) aboard its upcoming flagship, Norwegian Aura. The advanced filtration technology is designed to improve engine efficiency, reduce maintenance requirements and support more sustainable ship operations by replacing traditional disposable filtration systems with a reusable alternative.

Norwegian Aura is currently under construction at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, where it recently achieved an important construction milestone with its successful float-out. The vessel is expected to enter service in May 2027 and will become the largest ship ever delivered to Norwegian Cruise Line, further expanding the company’s Prima Class fleet.

The new vessel will join Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna, making it the fourth Prima Class ship to operate with the Series 2 turbocharger filtration system. Unlike conventional turbocharger filtration systems that rely on disposable filter materials, the Series 2 system features a washable electromechanical filter element. This reusable design significantly reduces the need for replacement filters, helping minimise operational waste while lowering maintenance expenses over the vessel’s lifetime.
The technology also delivers important technical advantages. Turbochargers require a steady supply of clean air to maintain optimum engine performance. When airborne contaminants such as dust, salt particles and other debris enter the intake system, they can accumulate inside the charge air cooler and other engine components. This build-up reduces cooling efficiency, increases exhaust gas temperatures and forces engines to consume more fuel in order to maintain performance.
By capturing contaminants before they enter the turbocharger, the advanced filtration system helps maintain cleaner engine components and more consistent airflow. The technology is also scheduled to be installed across several vessels operated by Cunard, including Queen Anne, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2 during 2026. In addition, P&O Cruises has ordered the same filtration system for Ventura, Britannia, Arvia, Azura and Iona, further demonstrating the growing adoption of sustainable engine technologies throughout the cruise industry.
