In its latest 2023 report, the premier aviation data platform OAG has unveiled the most frequented air routes globally. This insightful analysis, drawing from OAG’s comprehensive Global Airline Schedules Data, offers a detailed look at the most traveled routes both within countries and across borders.

The Asia-Pacific region dominates the list, securing seven spots in the top ten international routes and nine in domestic categories. Leading the pack is the heavily trafficked Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Singapore Changi (SIN) route, boasting a staggering 4.9 million seats. Following closely is the Cairo (CAI) to Jeddah (JED) route, which has seen a significant increase to 4.8 million seats from 3.4 million in 2019.

London Heathrow (LHR) stands as the fourth busiest airport globally this year, offering 49,370,859 seats. Meanwhile, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) takes the top spot, followed by Dubai International Airport (DXB) in second place.

In domestic travel, the Beijing (PEK) to Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) route leads in China, while in the U.S., the Honolulu (HNL) to Kahului (OGG) route is the most frequented.

John Grant, the chief analyst at OAG, comments on the trend, noting Asia’s continued dominance in global air travel due to its appeal as a tourist destination. He also highlights that despite not reaching the pre-2019 capacity, London Heathrow remains a crucial hub in the international air travel network.
