Summer reveals Asia-Pacific travellers’ love for iconic European & US spots, with Athens & Tokyo among top picks, blending rich culture with new adventures.

As the summer season unfurls its warmth across the northern hemisphere, travellers from the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region set their sights on destinations both far and near, weaving tales of exploration and discovery. The trend for the summer travel window between June and August reveals a fascinating narrative of preferences, with well-known European and US spots dominating the list, showcasing a blend of classic allure and new horizons.

A Glimpse into Timeless Elegance and Emerging Favourites

Among the constellation of destinations, Athens shines brightly, marking its position as the fifth most popular choice. This ancient city is not just climbing the charts in popularity but also witnessing a significant surge in the length of stays, with travellers extending their visits by an impressive 11 days more than the previous year. This uptick signals a growing desire to immerse in the rich tapestry of history and culture that Athens offers.

Interestingly, the concept of ‘Everywhere’ holds a special place on the list, reflecting a universal zest among travellers to explore the unknown and discover hidden gems across the globe. This trend underscores the ever-present curiosity and adventurous spirit that drive people to traverse the world.

Short Stays and Extended Escapes: A Mixed Bag of Travel Lengths

Tokyo emerges as a unique case, being the only destination where travellers tend to spend less than ten days. However, when Asia-Pacific travellers venture further afield, they prefer to make the most of their journeys, often spending around two weeks at their chosen destinations. This blend of short and extended stays highlights the varied travel philosophies and the quest to balance exploration with relaxation.

In the bustling cities of the US, travel patterns exhibit interesting shifts. While New York sees a reduction in trip duration, down by about seven days on average, Los Angeles witnesses an uptick, with visitors extending their stays to nearly 14 days. These fluctuations mirror changing preferences and the dynamic nature of travel trends.

Trending Destinations: A Regional and Global Perspective

When it comes to trends, APAC travellers show a keen interest in exploring closer to home, with New Delhi and Shanghai leading the charge in regional popularity. Their rising search frequencies point towards a growing affinity for the diverse experiences that these cities offer.

Globally, destinations like Jeddah, Dubrovnik, and Victoria make their mark as trending spots outside the Asia-Pacific region, captivating travellers with their unique charms and promising an average stay of 11 to 14 days. In contrast, Pangkalan Bun in Borneo, Indonesia, stands out as the sole trending destination witnessing an increase in trip length, from four to seven days, hinting at its rising appeal among adventurers seeking the untamed beauty of nature.

However, it’s not all upward trends; Shanghai and Chengdu observe a dip in the duration of visits, indicating a shift towards shorter, perhaps more frequent trips. This trend is reflective of a broader pattern across the APAC region, where there’s a discernible inclination towards shorter getaways, echoing a global movement towards brief, yet meaningful, travel experiences.

As the summer travel season unfolds, Asia-Pacific travellers continue to chase the sun across continents, drawn to both the familiar and the novel. Their choices reflect a rich tapestry of desires and priorities, from deep cultural immersion to the allure of undiscovered paths. In this kaleidoscope of destinations, each journey tells a story, each stay adds a chapter, and the world, in its endless variety, waits to be explored.
