Airlink launches Cape Town–Zanzibar Saturdays, Creating A New Indian Ocean getaway

With Airlink initiating its inaugural year-round non-stop scheduled service between Cape Town and Zanzibar to launch on 3 October 2026, the route will be squarely within the sweet spot for leisure demand between South Africa and Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coast. Operating once per week on a Saturday, Western Cape holiday makers will have a direct path into one of East Africa’s premier tourist destinations without being rerouted via Johannesburg.
Flight 4Z 356 will depart Cape Town International Airport at 08:15, arriving in Zanzibar at 14:30 local time after a flying time of just over six hours. The return sector, flight 4Z 357, will leave Zanzibar at 15:30 and touch down in Cape Town at 20:50, with timings deliberately structured to avoid overnight departures and arrivals and to allow travellers to maximise both their departure morning and arrival evening.
New E195-E2 jets on the route
Airlink will roster its new-generation Embraer E195-E2 jets on the Cape Town–Zanzibar service, using the aircraft as its flagship on the growing East Africa network. The E195-E2s are configured in a two-class layout with around 124 seats arranged 2–2 across the cabin, meaning there are no middle seats and both business and economy customers benefit from a more spacious, boutique feel compared with larger single-aisle aircraft.
The airline has highlighted the E195-E2’s combination of comfort and fuel efficiency, noting that the type’s lower emissions and quieter operation support both environmental and passenger-experience goals on longer regional sectors such as Cape Town to Zanzibar. According to Airlink, the aircraft’s range and economics are a key enabler in connecting secondary hubs like Cape Town directly to high-demand leisure destinations across the continent.

Strengthening Cape Town as a hub
Airlink has described Cape Town as its second hub and an increasingly important connecting point for regional and long-haul travellers using its own network and partner airlines. By introducing direct Cape Town to Zanzibar flights, the carrier is effectively extending the reach of the Mother City to East Africa’s beach and safari circuit, complementing its existing Johannesburg–Zanzibar route that is due to launch in June 2026.
The airline has indicated that customers already holding Airlink itineraries between Cape Town, Johannesburg and Zanzibar will be able to switch to the new non-stop service at no additional charge, as long as they remain in the same cabin, underscoring its strategy to streamline journeys and remove the inconvenience of domestic connections. This positions Cape Town more firmly as a leisure and trade gateway for inbound visitors who may start their African itineraries in the Western Cape before continuing to Zanzibar and other regional destinations.

Growing demand for Zanzibar holidays
Airlink is clearly targeting the Cape Town to Zanzibar holiday market with the new route, emphasising that the service is primarily aimed at leisure travellers drawn to the island’s beaches, coral reefs and historic Stone Town. Zanzibar has seen a steady rise in tourism from South Africa in recent years, thanks to simplified visa processes, increased marketing of the destination and a growing interest in twin-centre trips combining Cape Town’s wine estates and urban attractions with tropical downtime on the Spice Island.
Beyond tourism, the airline has pointed to Zanzibar’s expanding economy, including sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, marine services and offshore oil and gas exploration, which are helping to stimulate two-way business and trade flows. The new direct flights from Cape Town are expected to appeal not only to holidaymakers but also to corporate travellers and investors needing a more convenient link between the Western Cape and Tanzania’s archipelago.
Travel experience and booking information
For travellers planning Cape Town to Zanzibar holiday packages, the Saturday-only schedule offers a neat template for seven-night or 14-night stays, with morning departures allowing same-day resort check-in and afternoon returns that still get passengers home at a reasonable evening hour. The flight times also align with onward connections on Airlink’s domestic and regional network, making it easier for passengers from elsewhere in Southern Africa to route through Cape Town and continue to Zanzibar on a single ticket.
Bookings for the Cape Town–Zanzibar flights are already open through Airlink’s official website, travel agents and global distribution systems, with the airline encouraging early reservations ahead of the October 2026 launch. Travellers are being referred to Airlink’s online channels for the latest information on fares, schedules, baggage policies and any visa or health requirements for entry into Tanzania.
A new chapter in Cape Town travel
Many residents of the Western Cape will no longer have to settle with just dreaming about watching the sun set from the palms of Zanzibar while sitting beneath the shadow of Table Mountain in Cape Town on the same day as waking, as Airlink is set to make this possible in a trip of which prices are finally manageable. The non-stop Cape Town–Zanzibar flight service, aboard modern E195-E2 aircraft from Embraer, will transform how South Africans go on an Indian Ocean holiday. It offers the opportunity to add an island experience after a trip to the Mother City, or simply to fly direct to the exotic, spice scented shores of Tanzania.
