Australia and China, plus more markets, are fueling Indonesia’s tourism growth in August 2026. Indonesia’s tourism recovery was bolstered in August 2026 as rising demand from Australia and China, plus Malaysia and other international markets, propelled foreign arrivals sharply higher. Around 1.60 million international tourist visits were recorded during the month, representing a 6.27% year-on-year increase. Growth also accelerated from the 2.95% annual rise recorded in July. Stronger regional demand, improving international air connectivity and sustained interest in Indonesian destinations have continued to support the country’s tourism sector. Bali, Jakarta and other major gateways have remained central to this expanding international travel momentum.

Indonesia Tourism Gains Fresh Momentum in August

A stronger performance was recorded by Indonesia tourism during August as international visitor numbers moved higher both annually and monthly.

Approximately 1,599,660 foreign tourist visits were registered during the month. This represented an increase of 6.27% compared with August 2025. Arrivals were also around 4.89% higher than in July 2026, showing that travel demand strengthened as the peak holiday period continued.

The August performance followed approximately 1.53 million foreign tourist visits in July, when annual growth had been limited to 2.95%.

The acceleration has provided another indication that Indonesia’s international tourism recovery is continuing to broaden.

Australia and China Strengthen Indonesia’s International Visitor Base

Demand from Australia and China played an important role in the August increase.

Australian visitor arrivals were reported to have increased by around 10.41% year-on-year, reinforcing Australia’s position as one of Indonesia’s most important tourism markets.

Around 171,000 Australian visitors travelled to Indonesia during August, accounting for approximately 10.75% of total international arrivals.

China also delivered significant growth. Visitor arrivals from the Chinese market were reported to have increased by approximately 15.57% year-on-year.

Around 162,000 Chinese visitors were received, giving China a share of roughly 10.16% of total arrivals.

The strong performances from these two major markets have added significant momentum to Indonesia’s inbound tourism growth.

Malaysia Remains Indonesia’s Largest Source Market

Although Australia and China produced strong growth, Malaysia remained Indonesia’s biggest international tourism source market.

Around 296,227 Malaysian visitors were recorded in August. Malaysia therefore accounted for approximately 18.52% of all foreign tourist arrivals during the month.

Malaysian arrivals surged by around 28.95% compared with the previous year, making the market one of the strongest contributors to Indonesia’s tourism growth.

Indonesia’s geographical proximity to Malaysia, extensive air connections and strong regional travel links have continued to make cross-border tourism easier.

Together, Malaysia, Australia and China accounted for a considerable proportion of Indonesia’s international visitor volume during August.

Singapore, United States and Middle East Add More Growth

Growth was not limited to Indonesia’s three largest markets.

Arrivals from Singapore were reported to have increased by approximately 1.40% year-on-year, while visits from the United States rose by around 7.26%.

Visitor numbers from the Middle East were also reported to have increased by approximately 2.86%.

This wider spread of international demand has been important for Indonesia because tourism growth is increasingly being supported by both nearby Asian markets and longer-haul travellers.

The combination has allowed Indonesian destinations to attract beach travellers, cultural tourists, luxury visitors, adventure seekers and city-break travellers across different seasons.

India, Japan and European Markets Record Softer Demand

Not every international market recorded growth during August.

Visitor arrivals from India were reported to have declined by around 4.93% year-on-year, while arrivals from Japan dropped approximately 2.33%.

Visits from Timor-Leste were also reported to have fallen by about 2.38%.

A softer performance was additionally seen from parts of Europe. Overall arrivals from the European Union were reported to have decreased by around 3.07%.

Within Europe, arrivals from the Netherlands fell approximately 11.44%, while the German market declined by around 3.32%.

These market-level movements show that Indonesia’s overall growth remained uneven despite the strong national result.

Indonesia Welcomes 10.58 Million International Visitors

The longer-term tourism picture has remained positive.

Between January and August 2026, approximately 10.58 million international tourist visits were recorded across Indonesia.

This represented a 5.38% increase compared with the same period of 2025.

Importantly, the 5.38% figure is the corrected official growth rate. The cumulative increase should not be reported as 5.83%.

The January–August total has been identified as the highest level recorded for this period since 2020, highlighting how strongly international tourism has recovered from the disruption experienced earlier in the decade.

Visitor volumes are now moving increasingly closer to the levels recorded before the global pandemic.

Bali Continues to Anchor Indonesia’s Tourism Recovery

Bali has continued to occupy a central position in Indonesia’s international tourism economy.

Most international visitors entered through Indonesia’s principal gateways during August. Of the nearly 1.60 million foreign arrivals, approximately 1.43 million visits were processed through major international entry points, while around 166,600 arrivals were recorded through other border gateways.

I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali remained one of the country’s most important international entry hubs.

Australian travellers continued to represent an especially important visitor group using Bali’s main airport.

The island’s beaches, resorts, wellness experiences, cultural attractions and growing hospitality infrastructure continue to support strong international demand.

International Air Travel Supports Tourism Expansion

The tourism increase was also accompanied by stronger international aviation activity.

Approximately 1.9 million international air passengers were recorded in Indonesia during August 2026.

International passenger traffic was reported to have increased by around 7.25% year-on-year.

The increase in international aviation activity has supported the continued recovery of Indonesia’s tourism sector by providing more travel opportunities between the country and important overseas markets.

By contrast, domestic air passenger numbers were reported to have declined by around 3.43%, reaching approximately 4.8 million during the month.

The figures underline the increasingly important role being played by international aviation in Indonesia’s 2026 tourism performance.

Hotels Benefit as International Demand Strengthens

Accommodation demand also improved as more tourists travelled across the country.

The average occupancy rate at star-rated Indonesian hotels reached approximately 52.52% in August 2026.

This represented an improvement of around 2.01 percentage points compared with August 2025.

Higher occupancy has been supported by international arrivals as well as Indonesia’s enormous domestic tourism market.

Destinations including Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Lombok and other leisure centres continue to benefit from demand for accommodation, dining, transport, shopping and tourism experiences.

The stronger hotel performance indicates that visitor growth is being translated into activity across the wider tourism economy.

Domestic Tourism Remains a Powerful Travel Engine

Indonesia’s international tourism recovery has been complemented by exceptionally strong domestic travel.

Around 104.30 million domestic tourism trips were recorded during August, representing an increase of approximately 11.47% year-on-year.

During the first eight months of 2026, domestic tourism trips reached approximately 842.15 million, increasing around 4.29% compared with the same period a year earlier.

Domestic travellers therefore continue to provide a major foundation for hotels, attractions, airlines, restaurants and transport providers.

This combination of international tourism growth and large-scale domestic travel has given Indonesia one of the region’s most diversified tourism demand bases.

Higher Visitor Spending Adds Economic Value

Indonesia is also receiving greater economic value from international tourism.

During the first half of 2026, average spending by foreign visitors was estimated at around US$1,313 per visit.

Average visitor expenditure increased approximately 6.36%, while around 7.45 million international visits were recorded during the first six months of the year.

The increase indicates that tourism growth is not being driven only by higher visitor numbers. More spending is also being generated through accommodation, food, transport, shopping, attractions and tourism experiences.

This has strengthened Indonesia’s focus on attracting travellers who remain longer and contribute more to local tourism economies.

Indonesia Tourism Moves Towards an Ambitious 2026 Target

Indonesia has been working towards receiving roughly 16 million to 17 million international visitors in 2026, while broader planning projections have previously extended as high as approximately 17.6 million.

Greater attention has been placed on Southeast Asia, East Asia and medium-haul tourism markets, supported by international promotion, stronger digital marketing and improved aviation connectivity.

Australia, China and more markets are fueling Indonesia tourism growth in August 2026. Surging demand from key source countries and improved international air connectivity drove foreign visits up 6.27% year-on-year to 1.60 million.

Australia is tracking China, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States and other markets in boosting Indonesia tourism growth, and with 6.27% more arrivals in August, that’s a fresh boost in international travel to the archipelago. With 10.58 million foreign visits recorded during January-August, increased air traffic, better hotel occupancy and rising visitor spending will help Indonesia push deeper into its next phase of tourism growth.
