European golf icon Colin Montgomerie joined amateur players and invited guests at Verdura Resort in Sicily for the first Sir Rocco Forte Captain’s Trophy, a four-day golf and hospitality event held in September.

The inaugural tournament combined competitive golf with luxury resort experiences and elements of Sicilian culture. The programme was staged across Verdura Resort’s two 18-hole championship courses and was organised in partnership with Raro Discovery, the Milan-based travel agency and tour operator.

Montgomerie was one of the central figures throughout the event. The Ryder Cup veteran and eight-time European Tour Order of Merit winner took part in several activities designed to give participating golfers closer access to his experience at the highest level of the sport.

One of the programme highlights was a dedicated driving-range exhibition. During the session, Montgomerie demonstrated aspects of his technique and provided participants with insight into the playing approach that shaped his professional career.

Guests were also given an opportunity to hear more about his experiences during an exclusive evening interview. The discussion looked back at a career that produced 31 European Tour victories and eight Ryder Cup appearances, while providing a broader perspective on his years competing at the top of international golf.

Beyond its sporting programme, the Captain’s Trophy was structured as a wider resort experience. Golf was combined with dining, wellness, leisure and social activities, allowing participants to experience different parts of Verdura Resort during the four-day gathering.

The programme opened with a sunset aperitivo and welcome dinner at Amare Restaurant, setting the stage for the competitive rounds that followed.

Golf began with an 18-hole Stableford round on Verdura Resort’s East Links course. Participants then moved to the West Shore course for another 18-hole round on the second day of competition.

Together, the two rounds formed a 36-hole Stableford tournament open to amateur golfers registered with their respective golf federations.

The competition was divided into three handicap categories, with awards covering both net and gross performances. Results were recognised through individual classifications as well as club leaderboards, adding both personal and team competition to the tournament format.

The sporting programme concluded with a prize ceremony and gala dinner at Zagara, bringing the inaugural edition of the event to a close.

Team Verdura Golf Club secured the overall team title. In the individual classifications, Massimo Calcara finished first in the First Net Category, while Andres Jimenez Villa claimed the Second Net Category. Rudy Botta secured the Scratch Net title.

The launch of the Sir Rocco Forte Captain’s Trophy adds another golf-focused experience to Verdura Resort’s hospitality programme in Sicily, bringing together championship courses, amateur competition and access to one of European golf’s most established figures.

By combining two rounds of competitive play with resort dining, wellness and leisure experiences, the four-day programme was designed to extend beyond a conventional golf tournament and provide participants with a broader luxury sporting stay in Sicily.

Montgomerie said: “It was a real pleasure to be part of the first Sir Rocco Forte Captain’s Trophy. I have visited mainland Italy many times over the years, including to play in Italian Opens, but this was my first time in Sicily – and it has been an absolute dream.

“It is even better than I could have imagined: so peaceful, beautiful and idyllic. I love the Mediterranean, the people, the food and the incredible setting here at Verdura. Both the East Links and the West Shore courses are fantastic, and the facilities around them are first class, giving you everything you need to enjoy your golf. It is a very special place.”

The experience reached well beyond the fairways, giving accompanying guests the opportunity to explore Sicily’s culinary traditions through dedicated cooking sessions. The classes were led by Fulvio Pierangelini, Creative Director of Food at Rocco Forte Hotels, and centred on the island’s seasonal ingredients and deeply rooted food culture. Guests were introduced to Pierangelini’s individual interpretation of Italian cooking, while menus served throughout the programme further highlighted Sicily’s distinctive produce, regional recipes and Mediterranean flavours.

The golf tournament was overseen by Donato Di Ponziano, Golf Development Supervisor at Rocco Forte Hotels. The programme was designed to combine the competitive character of tournament golf with the more leisurely atmosphere of a luxury resort stay, allowing participants to enjoy the sporting challenge alongside the wider hospitality and lifestyle experiences offered during the event.

Reflecting on the inaugural event, he said: “The first Sir Rocco Forte Captain’s Trophy delivered everything we hoped for – a new chapter for golf at Verdura, bringing together competition, culture and conversation in a way that reflects both the spirit of the game and the wider experience at Verdura Resort. Welcoming Colin Montgomerie added a special dimension to the event, and it was a privilege to host our guests for such a memorable few days in Sicily.”

Sir Rocco Forte said: “Golf has always been about camaraderie, competition and the joy of great surroundings. At Verdura Resort, the Captain’s Trophy celebrates all three.”

Set against the dramatic southern coast of Sicily, Verdura Resort created an impressive setting for the first edition of the event. Championship golf formed the centrepiece of the programme while the property’s extensive dining, sporting and wellness experiences added another dimension to the stay. Verdura has secured a place among the World’s Top 100 Golf Resorts 2026 and was also recognised as Europe’s Best Golf Resort at the 2025 World Golf Awards.

The experience extended well beyond the golf course. Guests had access to Verdura Resort’s practice facilities and secluded Mediterranean coastline alongside its expansive 4,000-square-metre Irene Forte Spa. The resort’s restaurants and experiences inspired by Sicilian culture and traditions were also incorporated into the programme, combining competitive golf with leisure, wellness and destination-led hospitality.

The inaugural occasion was further marked by Raro Discovery with the introduction of 50 blockchain-certified NFTs created exclusively for participants. The digital collection transforms Colin Montgomerie’s golf swing into 50 separate frames, with every NFT representing an individual moment from the sequence. When brought together, all 50 pieces recreate the complete swing.

Participants can claim their individual digital collectible through the Raro Travel Atelier, providing them with a blockchain-verifiable memento connected to the first edition of the event. The initiative also represents the opening chapter of a wider Raro Discovery project examining how digital collectibles could strengthen connections between hospitality businesses and guests beyond a physical stay or event.
