Malta International Airport is anticipating a significant recovery in passenger numbers, with a forecast of around 7.2 million passengers for the year 2023. This would almost match the record year of 2019, when 7.3 million passengers used the airport before the pandemic’s impact. The first half of 2023 saw impressive traffic of 3.43 million passengers, surpassing 2019 levels by 5.6%, and outperforming several other European airports in terms of mid-year passenger volumes.

The CEO of Malta International Airport, Alan Borg, expressed satisfaction with the robust performance despite challenging macroeconomics. However, he pointed out that a travel sentiment survey by the European Travel Commission revealed potential challenges, such as rising airfares and inflation, that could affect travel demand in Europe.

Italy accounted for the largest portion of passengers at 24%, while the UK held the second-highest market share despite a 20% decrease since 2019. Notably, markets from France and Poland showed significant growth of 51% and 55%, respectively.

The airport is actively working on infrastructure improvements, with projects like the Apron X and runway renovations to accommodate future growth. In terms of financial performance, the Group’s revenue for January to June 2023 increased by 43.8% over the previous year, reaching €53.6 million. The company has updated its guidance for the year, aiming to host 7.2 million passengers and generate revenues of €113 million.

Both Malta International Airport and the Malta Tourism Authority are optimistic about the destination’s appeal and the efforts to boost connectivity to support the tourism industry. The company has announced an interim dividend of €0.03c per share to its shareholders based on its solid traffic performance and expectations for the upcoming winter season.
