Bulgaria and Plovdiv are entering a new era of wine tourism in 2026, as national tourism marketing shifts toward culture, archaeology, food, wine regions, and experiences beyond the country’s well-known beach resorts. This development is based on the fact that 2026 has been declared as the year of cultural tourism in Bulgaria.

Cultural Tourism Moves Into the National Spotlight

Bulgaria’s Ministry of Tourism has established a dedicated 2026 cultural tourism programme featuring cultural routes, archaeological attractions, religious tourism, wine and culinary tourism, regional destinations and lesser-known places. The programme promotes heritage experiences across the country and broadens itineraries beyond the Black Sea coast.

Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo, the Rhodope Mountains, and other heritage regions offer access to archaeological sites, historic architecture, museums, festivals, and traditional food experiences. Visitors can combine cultural attractions with walking, nature and local cuisine.

Iter Vitis Connects Wine With Heritage

Bulgaria joined the Council of Europe-certified Iter Vitis Cultural Route in November 2025, adding the country to a European network focused on vine-growing landscapes, winemaking heritage and wine tourism. The membership connects Bulgarian wine regions with cultural travel routes.

Plovdiv and the Thracian Lowlands are central to Bulgaria’s wine and archaeological tourism offer. Visitors can combine winery visits and tastings with access to ancient settlements, archaeological landscapes and cultural attractions associated with Thracian heritage.

The route extends the experience from individual wineries to broader regional journeys. Wine travellers can move between vineyards, historic towns, archaeological sites, restaurants and rural accommodation, creating itineraries.

Thracian Heritage Adds Depth to Wine Journeys

The Thracian Lowlands and nearby regions contain important archaeological destinations linked to ancient Thracian culture. Perperikon in the Eastern Rhodopes and the sanctuary at Tatul provide archaeological experiences that can be incorporated into wider cultural itineraries.

Archaeology and wine give visitors access to different aspects of Bulgaria’s heritage within one trip. Ancient sites, vineyards, traditional cuisine and rural landscapes can be connected through road journeys across southern Bulgaria.

Mavrud, Broad-Leaved Melnik and Rubin are among the Bulgarian grape varieties associated with the country’s wine identity. Their presence in regional wineries supports tasting experiences that connect local agriculture with gastronomy and destination travel.

Rural Accommodation Gains a Larger Role

Wine and cultural tourism can extend visitor activity into smaller settlements where accommodation includes family-run guesthouses, traditional properties and rural stays. These options provide bases for travellers exploring vineyards, archaeological sites and historic communities.

Melnik combines wine tourism with historic architecture and access to the landscapes of southwestern Bulgaria. The town can form part of a wider route linking wineries with cultural attractions and outdoor experiences.

Rural tourism gives visitors opportunities to spend more time in individual regions. Longer stays can support restaurants, food producers, guides, transport services and cultural attractions.

Schengen and Eurozone Access Supports Travel

Bulgaria’s full entry into the Schengen Area removed internal land-border checks with other Schengen countries from January 2025. The country also adopted the euro on 1 January 2026. These changes simplify elements of cross-border travel for European visitors and provide a common currency for tourists using Bulgaria within wider European itineraries.

These changes support independent travellers planning road trips across southeastern Europe. Bulgaria’s position between Central Europe, the Balkans and Türkiye allows cultural and wine routes to be incorporated into multi-country journeys.

Year-Round Tourism Expands Beyond Summer

Cultural and wine tourism can operate across multiple seasons. Spring and autumn provide conditions for vineyard visits, food experiences and archaeological excursions, while winter can connect heritage travel with mountain tourism in destinations across the Rila, Pirin and Rhodope ranges.

The national focus on cultural tourism also places attention on festivals, museums, historic settlements and regional traditions that can attract visitors outside the peak seaside season.

In July 2026, Bulgaria’s Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Agriculture and Food launched a national partnership with the wine sector to promote Bulgarian wine, develop national and regional wine routes and strengthen connections between local wine, seasonal cuisine and tourism experiences. The initiative places wine within tourism development.

Bulgaria Builds a Broader Travel Network

The aim of cultural tourism in Bulgaria in 2026 is the development of a system of tourism which connects cities, vineyards, archaeological places, mountains, villages and food tours. Plovdiv and the Thracian Lowland area form the base for the combination of wine and culture, and Melnik and the rest of the regional destinations form the smaller ones. International and individual tourists have an opportunity to explore the country through these routes. Heritage, wine, food, archaeology and nature can be integrated into road itineraries covering various regions. Thus, a wider system of tourism will develop where the destinations of cultural tourism and wine tourism supplement the existing seaside and mountain resorts.
