Since the start of the year, a global social media outreach campaign titled “China’s Free Trade Port, World-Class Resort Island: Welcome to Cool Hainan” has showcased the unique appeal of China’s Hainan Free Trade Port to audiences worldwide. The campaign has increased international awareness of the tropical island destination, encouraging more overseas travellers to explore Hainan’s beaches, culture, tourism experiences and growing role as a world-class holiday destination.
Hainan Province has launched a major international tourism communication campaign aimed at increasing global awareness of the island as a world-class holiday destination. The initiative was organised by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports of Hainan Province and used leading social media platforms to connect with international travellers. The campaign published 56 travel-focused content pieces that generated more than 16 million views and reached global audiences across key inbound markets, including Russian-speaking countries, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America. Through multilingual social media channels operating in Russian, Thai, Indonesian, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, the campaign engaged a combined audience of over 52 million followers.

Moving beyond traditional destination marketing approaches, the campaign introduced seven specially designed tourism content series that combined practical travel advice with immersive destination experiences. The content highlighted Hainan’s international tourism branding concepts, including “Cool Hainan”, “Top Ten Hainan Tourism Icons”, and “Cool Island”. Each month focused on a different aspect of the island’s tourism appeal. January promoted luxury holiday experiences along the Sunshine Coast, while February introduced visitors to the unique Spring Festival traditions of the Li and Miao ethnic communities. March showcased surfing culture and Wenchang aerospace-themed educational tours, followed by April’s focus on water sports and wellness travel.
The campaign continued throughout the year by presenting Hainan’s diverse tourism offerings through seasonal themes. May highlighted archaeological exploration and rainforest experiences, while June promoted rainforest road trips and visits to ethnic minority villages. In July, the campaign introduced “Ten Signature Marine Tourism Routes”, attracting significant global attention, with one individual social media post recording more than 2.6 million impressions.

The promotional effort presented Hainan as a destination offering a wide range of experiences, from tropical beaches and rainforest landscapes to cultural heritage, wellness retreats, outdoor adventures, and marine activities. Alongside showcasing scenic attractions, the campaign also provided international travellers with useful information about travel arrangements, including Hainan’s visa-free entry policies for visitors from 86 countries, temporary foreign driving permit options, shopping opportunities, and duty-free shopping and departure tax refund measures.
The campaign has generated strong interest among overseas social media audiences, with many users seeking additional details about travelling to Hainan. Questions focused on practical travel concerns such as visa requirements, local cuisine, accommodation options, sightseeing routes, and self-driving opportunities. Several international users also expressed interest in adding Hainan to their future travel plans, highlighting growing global curiosity about the island’s tourism potential.
Through this international digital outreach programme, Hainan aims to strengthen its reputation as a leading global resort destination and accelerate its transformation into an international tourism and consumption hub. The province is using its tropical coastal landscapes, cultural diversity, and tourism development policies to attract more international visitors.
With the advantages created by the Hainan Free Trade Port and its expanding openness policies, the province plans to continue improving tourism infrastructure, upgrading visitor services, and creating a more internationally oriented travel environment. The long-term goal is to position Hainan as a globally recognised island destination that combines natural beauty, cultural experiences, modern tourism facilities, and high-quality services for travellers from around the world.
