Austrian Airlines has achieved a significant milestone by meeting the stringent requirements of the European EMAS regulation (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) for the first time and obtaining certification under the international ISO 14001 standard for environmental management systems. This achievement places Austrian Airlines alongside other Lufthansa Group companies as a leader in corporate environmental stewardship. In 2023, the company’s environmental management system underwent a thorough examination by independent auditors, who praised the expertise and dedication of the staff involved in implementing EMAS.
“The successful introduction of an environmental management system to the highest standard
enables systematic and sustainable improvements in our business activities. We are proud that
Austrian Airlines is following a route that will support us in achieving our environmental goals,”
says CEO Annette Mann.
EMAS serves as a voluntary tool by the European Union, enabling organizations of any size and sector to enhance their environmental performance continually. It encompasses all ISO 14001 environmental management standard requirements, along with additional ones. Austrian Airlines has documented its environmental efforts in its inaugural Environmental Report for the year 2022 (available in German).
The airline is dedicated to initiatives and actions aimed at diminishing its ecological footprint and maximizing resource efficiency. As a member of the Lufthansa Group, it focuses especially on speeding up fleet modernization, refining flight operations, advancing the use of sustainable aviation fuels, and creating options for individuals and businesses to travel more sustainably.
