March in Abu Dhabi is a pivotal month for art aficionados, marking a significant boost in cultural tourism through the inauguration of the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation and the Rizq Art Initiative’s latest exhibition, ‘Listening for Traces: Conflict, Sound & Memory’. This period is further enriched by the launch of a solo exhibition by the acclaimed artist Akil Ahmad titled ‘Khatt’, in collaboration with Artbooth Gallery and Fairmont Bab Al Bahr. The exhibition showcases Ahmad’s exceptional calligraphy works, integrating traditional Arabic calligraphy with contemporary art forms, and is available for viewing in the lobby of Fairmont Bab Al Bahr from March 8 to April 15.

‘Khatt’ presents a unique opportunity for visitors to delve into the Arabic culture’s depth through Ahmad’s modern interpretation of calligraphic art. Residing in the UAE, the Syrian artist draws inspiration from Arabic poetry, calligraphy, and Maqams, skillfully converting auditory patterns into visual ones. His work simplifies Arabic letters into abstract forms, exploring themes of love, adversity, and perseverance, thereby creating a visual narrative that resonates with a broad audience.

Akil Ahmad’s mastery extends across three traditional Islamic arts: calligraphy, ornamentation, and poetry, with his creations being recognized internationally. Notably, three of his pieces are part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Islamic Art Malaysia, and his works have been featured in prestigious auctions by Christie’s, Sotheby’s, and Al Bahi in Qatar.

Coinciding with Ramadan, the exhibition offers a cultural feast for the senses, allowing visitors to break their fast at the Al Andalus Tent within the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr. The authentic Arabian buffet features live cooking, ouzi stations, barbecued delicacies, seafood, and traditional desserts, providing an immersive cultural experience.

The confluence of these art events in March significantly elevates Abu Dhabi’s status as a destination for cultural tourism. By hosting such exhibitions, the city not only showcases the rich heritage and innovative spirit of Arabic art but also positions itself as a global hub for art lovers, inviting both local and international visitors to explore its cultural offerings.
