Phoenix Sky Harbor’s premier dementia workshop makes a comeback

Arizona is currently in the midst of its bustling travel season. However, the prospect of travel or planning a future escape can be daunting for an estimated seven million individuals in the United States who are grappling with dementia. With the commencement of the new year, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is pleased to announce the return of its acclaimed Dementia Friendly Air Travel Workshop.

Misty Cisneros-Contreras, PHX’s Guest and Employee Experience Superintendent, emphasized the unique challenges faced by those with dementia, stating, “Traveling is not the same for everyone, and for those dealing with dementia, the airport can be stressful.” She further noted that adequate preparation can significantly impact the overall experience, making it less intimidating for both caregivers and their loved ones. The resurgence of the Dementia Friendly Air Travel Workshop aims to ensure that these special customers enjoy a positive travel experience.

Last summer, the Guest and Employee Experience Team at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport hosted the inaugural Dementia Friendly Air Travel Workshop. The event assisted passengers with dementia and their caregivers in planning and navigating the complexities of a busy airport. Phoenix Sky Harbor led the way as the first airport in the country to offer such a workshop, receiving recognition from Airports Council International – North America for the best Customer Experience Program for Large Airports in their Excellence in Airport Marketing, Communications, and Customer Experience Awards.

The upcoming workshop will once again bring together representatives from the airport, airlines, and TSA. They will share valuable information, provide tips, and address queries from family members and caregivers of individuals with dementia.

Scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 10, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the second Dementia Friendly Air Travel Workshop invites those interested in attending to email [email protected] with the subject line “Dementia Friendly Air Travel Workshop Registration.” Advance registration is recommended as seating for the event is limited.
