6.1 magnitude earthquake hits Java, Indonesia, causing buildings to sway. No significant damage or casualties have been reported yet.

On April 27, a significant 6.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the southern region of Java, Indonesia’s largest island, with no initial reports of injuries or major damage.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred 102 kilometers (63 miles) south of Banjar at a depth of 68.3 kilometers (42.4 miles), and no tsunami alerts were issued.

In Jakarta, the capital, high-rise buildings trembled for about a minute, while two-story residences experienced strong shaking in Bandung—the capital of West Java—and in the neighboring cities of Depok, Tangerang, Bogor, and Bekasi. The tremor was also felt in various other cities across West Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java, as reported by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency, which also issued a warning for potential aftershocks.

Earthquake occurrences are common throughout Indonesia, a vast archipelago nation, though they seldom affect Jakarta.

Located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a major area of seismic faults, Indonesia frequently experiences geological disturbances. This archipelago of 270 million people witnessed its deadliest earthquake in recent times in 2022—a 5.6 magnitude quake in Cianjur city, West Java, which claimed at least 602 lives. This was the most severe disaster since the 2018 earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi, which resulted in over 4,300 fatalities.

Furthermore, in 2004, a massive earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggered a devastating tsunami, leading to over 230,000 deaths across a dozen countries, with the majority occurring in Indonesia’s Aceh province.
