Attorney General Dana Nessel issued a warning to Michiganders about disaster scams amid the prediction of significant snowfall and gusty winds aimed towards West Michigan.

Homeowners want things back to normal as soon as possible, and the attorney general’s office reports that they are willing to repair damage caused by extreme weather.

Authorities observed that in these situations, con artists and extortionists often take advantage of drivers as well as homeowners.

In response to this concern, Nessel issued two alerts aimed at empowering consumers to comprehend their rights and safeguard themselves from scammers. The following advice is included in these alerts:

Letting the situation settle in and not acting on impulse, especially when people offer help right away in exchange for acceptance, happens quickly.

Examining homeowner’s insurance policies to determine the scope of coverage and contacting insurance agents for clarification.

Before hiring a home repair contractor, conduct thorough research to verify licenses, insurance coverage, reputation, and previous complaints.

Insisting on written agreements, avoiding cash transactions, and declining to pay the entire repair cost up front.

Nessel emphasized the importance of recognizing scammers’ tactics and strategies, advising residents to exercise caution when seeking urgent repairs. She also urged people to report any suspicions of fraudulent or unfair behavior by businesses in the aftermath of severe weather to her office’s Consumer Protection Team.

The attorney general’s office emphasized that when severe weather damages homes, homeowners frequently prioritize prompt repairs to restore normalcy. However, their urgency makes them vulnerable to scammers and price gougers who take advantage of the situation for personal gain.

Nessel reissued two alerts to give consumers the tools they need to protect themselves. These alerts sought to educate people about their rights and offer advice on how to avoid falling victim to scams during times of crisis.

Nessel emphasized the importance of vigilance, urging residents to be aware of common scam tactics and to proceed with caution when seeking urgent repairs. She also urged people to report any suspected fraudulent or unfair behavior by businesses in the aftermath of severe weather to her office’s Consumer Protection Team.

Nessel hoped that by issuing these alerts and emphasizing the importance of awareness and caution, Michigan residents would be better equipped to protect themselves from potential scams and price exploitation during the upcoming winter storm.
