On 5th March the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) declared Kevin Carey as the acting president and CEO. In addition to his new responsibilities, Carey will continue his duties as the senior executive vice president and COO of AHLA.

He steps into the role following the departure of William “Chip” Rogers, the previous president and CEO, who left last Friday to explore new professional opportunities.

Carey will directly communicate with the AHLA Board of Directors during his interim presidency until a new, permanent president and CEO is found and introduced. The AHLA Board is currently setting up a committee to seek and assess candidates for the president and CEO position and plans to hire an executive search firm to assist in this effort.

Having been AHLA’s COO since 2017, Carey has spearheaded several crucial initiatives leading to the organization’s significant growth and expansion, including the development of its strategic plan, modifications to the dues model, and a nearly 60% rise in revenue via membership increases, mergers, and strategic alliances. Before his tenure at AHLA, Carey had an extensive 25-plus year career at American Express, where he managed major global business segments within the company.

“As we begin our search for a permanent AHLA president & CEO, the association is in capable hands,” said AHLA Board Chair Kevin Jacobs. “Kevin’s deep knowledge of AHLA’s operations and his relationships with hospitality stakeholders throughout the industry make him the right leader for AHLA during this transition. The Board of Directors and I look forward to working with Kevin as AHLA continues to deliver highly effective advocacy, communications and member services for the industry.”

“I want to thank the Board for the opportunity to serve AHLA during this important time,” said Carey. “I look forward to working with my team members to continue doing what AHLA does best: serving members and achieving responsible public policy outcomes for hoteliers that advance this outstanding industry.”
