Air Arabia, a leading low-cost carrier, has recently broadened its operational horizons by establishing a new airbase at Saniat R’mel airport in Tetouan. The inauguration ceremony was attended by notable dignitaries including Younes Tazi, the Wali of the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, and Laila Mechbal, CEO of Air Arabia Maroc. This development marks a pivotal expansion for Air Arabia, which now boasts its sixth airbase in Morocco.

During the ribbon-cutting event, CEO Mechbal highlighted the strategic significance of the new base, pointing out that it would facilitate 13 direct flights to major European destinations such as Amsterdam, Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, and Brussels. This expansion is not just a boost for the airline but is also set to transform Tetouan into a more accessible tourist destination, given its proximity to the popular blue city of Chefchaouen.

The implications of this expansion are far-reaching, particularly for the tourism industry. Youssef Bennani, Director of Marketing and Commercial at the National Office of Airports (ONDA), supported this view by noting the timely nature of this expansion in response to the growing demands of air traffic. The airport itself has seen a significant increase in passenger numbers, with a 35% rise in 2023 compared to the previous year, evidencing the rising interest in the region.

Local tourism officials, including Moncef Al-Toub, President of the Provincial Tourism Council of Tetouan, have expressed optimism about the economic benefits of the new airbase. Al-Toub praised the initiative, citing the potential economic vitality it could bring to the region through new routes that connect Tetouan directly with cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Malaga.

This development follows closely on the heels of Air Arabia’s recent enhancements to its service offerings between Rabat and Agadir, which include the addition of three weekly flights. Such strategic moves by Air Arabia not only improve connectivity but also significantly contribute to the accessibility of scenic and culturally rich destinations within Morocco.

For airline travelers and global tourists, the establishment of the new airbase is a boon, facilitating easier and more frequent travel opportunities to explore Morocco’s rich cultural tapestry and scenic beauty. The increase in flights is expected to bring more visitors, which will invigorate local economies and promote cultural exchange.
