About a year after of immense loss due to the fire outbreak at SkyCity Convention Centre in central Auckland recently the reconstruction of the building has been restored and is now encouraging people with a new air bridge lifted into place.
The 30 metre long bridge that now sits across Hobson Street sits about 11m above ground level, and will link the New Zealand International Convention Centre’s hotel with the SkyCity Hotel on the opposite side. This is one of the first notable signs of reconstruction at the site.
Over 150 firefighters battled the outbreak on October 22, 2019 when roofing membrane was being laid at the under- construction SkyCity International Convention Centre. Several hundreds were immediately evacuated from buildings nearby, and central city streets surrounding the site were closed for days. The fire was found to be accidental.
In a press release Fletcher Construction mentioned that two mobile cranes were needed to lift the 85-tonne bridge into place on Saturday morning, while streets were closed. This is a positive step towards the rebuilding project for the client SkyCity according to the project director Grant Beckett who is working with a dedicated team to arrange building reconstruction services.
This bridge was built near Palmerston North, and then trucked to Auckland. Owing to the magnanimous size and weight, the structure was properly shifted at night through a three day journey and it made a made a spectacular entrance into Auckland on September 17 September.
The project is expected to be finished in 2023.
