India DGCA fines Air India ₹1.10 crore for safety breaches on extended-range routes, following an employee’s safety report and investigation.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India’s aviation regulatory authority, has imposed a penalty of INR 11 million on the national carrier Air India for not adhering to safety norms on specific extended-range routes. This decision followed an extensive investigation triggered by a safety report voluntarily submitted by an employee of the airline, which accused Air India of compromising safety on certain critical long-distance routes.

The initial findings of the investigation indicated that Air India had failed to comply with the required standards, leading to the issuance of a show-cause notice by the DGCA.

The report highlighted issues specifically related to aircraft leased by Air India. The DGCA stated that the operation of these leased aircraft did not meet the regulatory and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) performance standards. Consequently, the DGCA took disciplinary measures, resulting in the hefty fine imposed on Air India, as stated in their official statement.
