Air Niugini, Papua New Guinea’s national airline, plans to improve its services by purchasing six A220-100 aircraft as part of a fleet modernization project. This strategic shift was announced at a special event in Port Moresby attended by significant officials such as Prime Minister James Marape and Air Niugini Acting CEO Gary Seddon.

In this ground-breaking agreement, Air Niugini has committed to purchasing six A220-100s as well as three A220-300s and two A220-100s from third-party lessors. The A220, known for its long range, low fuel consumption, and roomy cabin, will fly over Air Niugini’s domestic and regional network, promising enhanced capacity and reliability.

“This milestone in our airline’s history will enhance trade and tourism in Papua New Guinea,” said Acting CEO Gary Seddon. The A220 provides excellent passenger comfort while drastically decreasing fuel consumption and pollutants.”

The fleet update coincides with Air Niugini’s 50th anniversary, adding significance to the occasion. Minister William Duma hopes that the new regional jets will have a transformational impact on Papua New Guinean travel, referring to them affectionately as the ‘People’s Balus’ (the people’s plane).

The Airbus A220, powered by Pratt & Whitney’s innovative GTFTM engines, consumes 25% less fuel and emits 25% less CO2 per seat than its predecessors. The airline’s dedication to sustainability is further demonstrated by its use of Airbus subsidiary NAVBLUE’s N-Flight Planning system, which ensures optimal fuel, time, and cost management while prioritizing safety and compliance.

Airbus Chief Commercial Officer Christian Scherer praised the A220’s efficiency, comfort, and expansion potential, thanking Air Niugini for their trust.

Air Niugini recently announced the implementation of NAVBLUE’s flight planning assistance technology, N-Flight Planning (N-FP), which would increase operating efficiency even more.

The A220, a category pioneer, is already in service with 17 airlines worldwide. The A220’s success story continues, with Airbus receiving over 800 orders, fitting with the aviation industry’s long-term aspirations.
