Today marks a significant achievement for AirAsia Malaysia (flight code AK), as it introduces its first flight from its second-largest hub in Malaysia, Kota Kinabalu, to Seoul, South Korea, with a full capacity of passengers on board. Beginning on 4 March 2024, this route will operate on a daily basis, signifying the airline’s ongoing expansion in Sabah with now 18 routes and 282 weekly flights operating to and from Kota Kinabalu.

The initiation of this direct service enhances the connectivity between these dynamic cities, offering Sabah residents an easy and economical way to experience Seoul’s rich cultural heritage, including attractions like Gyeongbokgung Palace and Cheonggyecheon Stream, and must-visit sites such as Lotte World Tower and Seoul Sky Observatory. Additionally, it opens the door to a variety of culinary adventures at places like Mangwon Market.

Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia Aviation Group Limited said: “We are very pleased to celebrate this new route with a full load which is a great sign of things to come. With approximately 150,000 arrivals recorded from South Korea to Sabah in 2023, we look forward to flying even more travellers into Sabah this year. As we continue to grow our East Malaysia hub, this expansion reinforces Kota Kinabalu’s position as a dynamic aviation base, boasting nine domestic and nine international destinations. As South Korea has been one of the top three market sources for tourism in Sabah, the introduction of this route will not only boost the state’s tourism and trade sectors but also strengthen the cultural and economic ties between South Korea and Sabah. We are confident that the addition of this route will further create significant mutual benefits for the people of South Korea and Sabah.”

The launch was commemorated with a vibrant ceremony featuring a mascot and giveaways, jointly hosted by AirAsia and the Korea Tourism Organisation, celebrating the passengers aboard the inaugural flight.

To commemorate this new route, AirAsia is rolling out exclusive promotional deals with fares starting at RM389 for a one-way trip, making it easier for people from Sabah to explore Seoul. These promotional rates are available for booking from 5 March to 17 March 2024, for travel dates ranging from 5 March to 26 October 2024, accessible through airasia.com and the AirAsia MOVE app, formerly known as the ‘airasia Superapp’.
