Airlines for America (A4A), the primary industry group for major U.S. airlines, forecasts that during the spring of 2024, from March 1 to April 30, U.S. airlines will transport an unprecedented 167.1 million passengers, averaging about 2.7 million daily. This figure surpasses the previous spring season’s record in 2023 by 6%, which saw 157.4 million passengers flying, approximately 2.6 million each day.

In response to this surge, U.S. airlines have increased the number of flights and the size of the airplanes they are operating compared to the previous year. With a global daily schedule of 24,500 flights and planes averaging 137 seats, the industry is making significant efforts to accommodate the increasing passenger numbers.

“U.S. airlines are meeting the record demand of this spring by having the right people in the right places and offering passengers more seats aboard larger aircraft,” said Rebecca Spicer, A4A Senior Vice President of Communications. “We encourage travelers to take advantage of technological upgrades carriers have made in their mobile apps so they can stay up to date on their latest flight announcements, baggage tracking, inflight entertainment and more.”

With a 4% increase in flight schedules, U.S. airlines are ensuring there are enough seats to meet the demand. Additionally, the sector has been actively recruiting to guarantee that staffing levels are adequate for the high demand. Throughout 2023, employment in U.S. passenger airlines rose by 7.5%, significantly outstripping the overall economy’s growth rate of 2%, demonstrating the aviation sector’s robust expansion compared to the broader economy.
