Airlines Going For Premiumization To Tempt New Customers

In a bid to draw prosperous customers in greater numbers, airlines, including the no-frills ones, are going for premiumization i.e., an attempt to make the product even more tempting to the consumers by highlights its superior quality. Lately, several global airlines including Emirates on their flights to India have launched premium economy seats.

Indian airlines are not far behind either. Tata-led Air India of late introduced the services while Vistara in India has been offering PE seats, both on international and domestic carriers, linking all the well-known metros for the last 8 years. Furthermore, the largest carrier of India by market share, budget airline Indigo on its newer planes is hoped to start PE services as well by 2024-25, with which it could possibly can enter into the European markets and additionally into Asia.

As per industry sources, the airline could go with a longer seat pitch of about 34 inches for the PE cabin for 25-30 of its 175-185 seats while other seats could see a developed seat pitch too. 

At present, the airline operates a fleet of over 330 aircraft, and 970 planes are on order. This is a palpable decision of the company as the airline would have to decrease the formation and go for smaller capacity to accommodate.
