Alstom Secures Contract to Service X-Trafik Trains for VR Sverige AB in Gävleborg

Alstom, the foremost authority in innovative and eco-friendly transportation solutions, will oversee the upkeep of the X-trafik train ensemble, which includes nine trains with configurations of two to three carriages each. This responsibility comes as part of a new agreement through which VR Sverige AB will operate these X-trains within Gävleborg County.

Spanning eleven years, this comprehensive contract encompasses both the operational management and maintenance of the fleet. While VR Sverige AB will assume the operational duties, the maintenance work for X-trafik’s trains will be conducted at Alstom’s facility in Gävle.

In a recent development in 2023, Alstom extended its maintenance contract with VR Sverige AB. Originally, this deal was worth around one billion Swedish Krona and entailed the upkeep of 30 regional trains over a decade. Alstom is now additionally charged with maintaining X-trafik’s fleet, which consists of nine Regina model trains with two to three carriages, operating routes that stretch from Gävle to Ljusdal and Sundsvall.

VR Sverige AB belongs to the Finnish VR Group and manages several transportation services in Sweden, including the Pågatågen in southern Sweden for Skånetrafiken, the regional transport in Skåne, and the Östgötapendeln, the railway network in Småland. In Stockholm, it oversees buses, trams, and local trains for SL, the city’s public transport authority. The VR Group, with a rich history of 160 years, is the backbone of Finland’s transport system, operating trains, buses, and trams across the country.

With a legacy of delivering over a thousand trains to the Swedish rail network and holding numerous significant maintenance contracts, Alstom stands as the primary supplier to the Swedish railway industry. It is at the forefront of implementing the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) in Sweden, handling both trainborne and trackside applications, and is in charge of rolling out the new national traffic management system for the Swedish Transport Administration.
