The Mixed Bathing World Executive Committee, headquartered in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, in southeastern Japan, is in the process of installing four new artworks by March 2024 as part of the “ALTERNATIVE-STATE” art project initiated in 2022 to bolster the city’s brand appeal. ALTERNATIVE-STATE, which aims to install eight artworks within a four-year span, spans the city by welcoming artists from various corners of the globe, ranging from seasoned virtuosos to emerging talents.

Beppu, renowned globally as a premier hot spring destination, not only embodies a distinctive culture centered around its thermal baths, but is also establishing itself as a burgeoning artistic hub, drawing attention to both local and international creative endeavors. The fusion of these two attractions—natural hot springs and the realm of art—renders Beppu an unparalleled travel destination.

Highlighted Artworks:

  1. Onsenbouquet by Michael Lin:
A vibrant mural adorning the walls of the longstanding Bluebird Kaikan cinema near Beppu Station, inspired by the intricate patterns of a Japanese “yukata” (light cotton kimono).
  2. Botanic GENKI-RO by Takashi Kuribayashi:
This botanical garden-themed artwork, slated for completion in March 2024 in the Kannawa district renowned for its steaming vents, will incorporate locally sourced plants cultivated within the installation.
  3. Watertower 10: Beppu City, 2023 by Tom Fruin:
Crafted by Tom Fruin, utilizing a water tower as its central motif, this piece incorporates sections resembling stained glass, crafted from recycled acrylic waste sourced from the vicinity. Illuminated from sunset till 11 p.m., it adds a captivating element to Beppu’s nocturnal landscape.
  4. Les Anges de Beppu by SARKIS:
Positioned atop the Amanek Hotel, this artwork showcases rainbow-colored feathers gradually unfolding as dusk descends. The hues ebb and flow in harmony with the artist’s breathing rhythm, creating a mesmerizing visual spectacle.
