According to a joint study by Amadeus and Accenture, innovative IT solutions have already contributed to reducing CO2 emissions by 50,000 metric tons in 2023 alone. When these solutions are applied globally across all airlines and airports, they could potentially cut emissions by as much as 5.7 million metric tons annually, which represents 0.6% of the total CO2 emissions from the aviation sector in the same year.

This significant finding comes against a backdrop of increasing travel demand and a concurrent push for sustainable aviation practices. Aviation is responsible for 2-3% of worldwide carbon emissions, a seemingly small figure that nevertheless represents a substantial environmental impact. The industry is responding with a variety of strategies aimed at achieving carbon neutrality.

The study, titled “The Power of Digital: IT solutions and their role in aviation’s path to net zero,” explores how digital innovations can help the aviation sector meet its carbon reduction goals. It highlights several strategies for reducing emissions, including updating aircraft fleets, incorporating Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), adopting new aircraft technologies, and enhancing operational efficiencies.

Focusing on IT as a strategic lever, the report suggests that digital tools can boost operational efficiency by enhancing fuel management and reducing operational costs. Advanced technologies like data dashboards, forecasting tools, and management systems provide critical insights and improve decision-making processes at every organizational level, from operations to executive leadership.

The study features two case studies that assess the impact of specific Amadeus IT solutions:

  1. Amadeus Airport Sequence Manager: This tool optimizes the sequence of airport departures, minimizing delays and maximizing runway throughput. It’s estimated that a universal adoption of this tool could prevent 493,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions each year.
  2. Amadeus Altéa Departure Control – Flight Management: This system enhances flight planning by optimizing fuel load and the aircraft’s center of gravity, both of which contribute to fuel conservation. If adopted globally, this solution could help avoid approximately 5.2 million metric tons of CO2 emissions every year.

“While IT solutions alone cannot fully decarbonize aviation, they offer a near‑term opportunity to improve operational efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. As the industry continues to evolve, Amadeus will support its customers in driving sustainable change through technology.”
Olivier Girault,Head of Solutions, Sustainability Office, Amadeus

“IT solutions that help optimize airline operations can deliver a substantial decarbonization contribution. It was revealing to see that the solutions we reviewed – if deployed globally to all airlines and airports – could reduce as much CO2 emissions as all the SAF expected to be produced globally in 20243.”
Jesko Neuenburg, Global Aviation Sustainability Lead, Accenture

The report’s broader analysis suggests that implementing these IT solutions at all relevant airlines and airports could reduce aviation’s carbon footprint significantly, equating to the emissions from about 10,000 transatlantic flights from London Heathrow to JFK.
