Embraer has received a significant order from American Airlines Group Inc. for 133 aircraft, aiming to cater to the domestic market in the United States. The order includes a confirmed purchase of 90 E175 aircraft by American, along with the option to buy an additional 43 jets. These planes will be configured with 76 seats across two classes, adhering to American’s standard layout. Should American Airlines exercise all its purchase rights, the total value of the transaction could surpass US$7 billion at the aircraft’s list prices. The confirmed orders will be noted in Embraer’s backlog for the first quarter of 2024.
The E175 enjoys widespread popularity in its region, with sales reaching 837 units (including the recent order of 90) and capturing an 88% share of the market since 2013.
“Over the past decade, we have invested heavily to modernize and simplify our fleet, which is the largest and youngest among U.S. network carriers,” said American’s CEO Robert Isom. “These orders will continue to fuel our fleet with newer, more efficient aircraft so we can continue to deliver the best network and record-setting operational reliability for our customers.”
American Airlines is concentrating its efforts on incorporating larger, dual-class regional aircraft into its fleet. This strategic move aims to enhance connections from smaller markets to the airline’s extensive global network. By the end of this decade, American plans to phase out all of its 50-seat, single-class regional jets, shifting focus to serve small and medium-sized markets with more spacious regional jets.
Following the completion of deliveries of the new Embraer E175s, these dual-class regional jets are anticipated to constitute the core of American’s regional fleet.
Arjan Meijer, President and CEO Embraer Commercial Aviation, said, “The E175 is truly the backbone of the U.S. aviation network, connecting all corners of the country. One of the world’s most successful aircraft programs, the E175 was upgraded with a series of modifications that improved fuel burn by 6.5%. This modern, comfortable, reliable, and efficient aircraft continues to deliver the connectivity the U.S. depends on day after day. This represents American’s largest-ever single order of E175s, and we thank American for its continued trust in our products and people.”
