Amtrak Commits to Expanding Diversity with New Initiatives in 2023 Annual Report

Amtrak has published its 2023 Annual Diversity Report, detailing representation data from all sectors and levels within the company for Fiscal Year 2023. This report tracks progress against both yearly and long-term objectives, and presents upcoming initiatives for FY24.

“Each of us brings a different life experience. We are stronger when those voices are heard,” said Amtrak Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, Robert Grasty. “As we see results — in the diversity of our new hires, in our retention of employees and the growth of diverse representation in our workforce – we continue to evolve. While there is always work to be done, I’m proud to be part of a team that’s committed to moving the organization and industry forward.”

The report underscores Amtrak’s commitment to its workforce, the workplace, and community engagement. It also introduces the Amtrak Diversity in Action pledge, which encourages every employee to create inclusive spaces, undertake unconscious bias training, and actively participate with colleagues, resources, and leadership. Notable achievements include:

• Diverse Representation: Amtrak’s workforce, comprising 22,658 individuals, includes more than 12,500 employees from diverse backgrounds.
• Candidate Diversity: Improvements in the hiring process have resulted in increased job offers and acceptances among diverse candidates.
• Diverse Talent Pipelines: Focused efforts in promotion and succession planning have led to 55% of promotions involving diverse talent in FY23.
• Employee Engagement: Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) have seen over 60% growth in membership year-over-year, providing both community and opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Investments in rebuilding core infrastructure, enhancing station facilities, modernizing customer experiences, and expanding service to new markets across the country are essential for America’s future. These endeavors are bolstered by leveraging the diverse talents, skills, and experiences of Amtrak’s employees.

As Amtrak expands its reach, connecting more communities across the nation, its team has grown to over 22,000 members.
