ANA holdings INC. today reports its financial results for the six months ended September 30, 2022. In the first six months of fiscal year 2022 (April 1, 2022 – September 30, 2022; hereinafter the “six months ended September 30, 2022”), the Japanese economy has been recovering, with corporate earnings generally improving and personal consumption gradually picking up. In the airline industry, overall passenger demand is rapidly recovering, with eased travel restrictions on domestic flights, as well as less entry restrictions in various countries for international flights.

Under these economic and operating conditions, the increased revenue is mainly due to the air transportation business that contributed to operating revenue of 790.7 billion yen for the six months ended September 30, 2022. ANA HD recorded an operating income of 31.4 billion yen, ordinary income of 30.2 billion yen, and net income attributable to owners of the parent was 19.5 billion yen, marking the first time in three years that ANA HD has recorded a net profit in the first half of the fiscal year.

“The positive results of the first half of the fiscal year demonstrate the progress we have made since the pandemic began and the determination and effort of our employees to help put the ANA Group in a favorable financial and operational position”, said Kimihiro Nakahori, Executive Vice President and Group Chief Financial Officer. “The perseverance and dedication of our employees is propelling ANA Group to overcome the challenging times and we look forward to seeing the continued increase as customers once again visit Japan.”

In addition to a remarkable increase in passenger demand on both international and domestic routes, international cargo continued its solid performance. As a result, operating revenue exceeded the amount recorded during the same period of the previous year, and the ANA Group recorded an operating income.

International Passenger Service (ANA)

・The number of passengers increased 5.1 times year-on-year, and revenue increased by 5.3 times, behind growing connection demand between Asia and North America, as well as recovering business demand originating from Japan and homecoming expatriates. This was a result from eased entry restrictions in various countries including Japan which updated its entry policies in September.

 Domestic Passenger Service (ANA)

・With no travel restriction in Japan, leisure demand improved especially during the Golden Week holidays and summer vacation period, while business travel gradually increased as well. This resulted in the number of passengers growing by 2.1 times year-on-year, and revenue by 2.2 times, which was the best half-yearly performance since the beginning of the COVID pandemic.

・ANA flexibly adjusted its flight schedule, operating additional flights during weekends and holidays. Boeing 777 aircraft, which completed engine refurbishment started to resume operations in June, enabling more capacity to meet the increase in demand.

・ANA increased Tokyo Narita flights to and from North America and Asia to accommodate transit demand, and increased Tokyo Haneda flights in response to improving demand out of Japan. ANA increased its flights to Hawaii in July as well. However, operations for Europe and China remain limited due to the Ukraine-Russia conflict and continued border restrictions for China.
