The Edwynn Houk Gallery has announced an exhibition for 2024 titled “Mona Kuhn: Between Modernism and Surrealism,” which will feature seven solarized photographs from Mona Kuhn’s series “Kings Road.” These photographs are set to be presented in conjunction with works by iconic artists who have explored surreal representation, such as Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy, Dora Maar, Erwin Blumenfeld, and Bill Brandt.

In this exhibition, Mona Kuhn’s works are said to depict an enigmatic love story through portraits that have been solarized, capturing a young woman’s journey within the mid-century modernist home designed by Rudolph Schindler in West Hollywood. Through her narrative, Kuhn engages with the primary themes of Surrealism—dreams, desire, and creation—while challenging traditional views, embodied by the woman’s search for both formal and spiritual unity with the King’s Road House. This house is celebrated as a hub of avant-garde thought, community, and creativity. Kuhn’s use of solarization melds the human form with architectural elements, creating a surreal space where body and building intermingle.

The exhibition also connects to the pioneering work of Man Ray, whose experiments with solarization—a technique he stumbled upon with Lee Miller in 1931—broke new ground in photography. Featured are two of Ray’s solarized gelatin silver prints, including a unique nude portrait of Meret Oppenheim and a second portrait that further explores these themes.

The juxtaposition of Kuhn’s contemporary work with that of Surrealist and modernist masters not only fosters a dialogue between different periods and styles but also highlights the evolution of photography as a medium capable of transcending reality. This exhibition is expected to offer insight into the intertwined paths of modernism and surrealism in photography, impacting the tourism industry by drawing art enthusiasts globally to the Edwynn Houk Gallery, thereby enriching cultural tourism and fostering a deeper appreciation for photographic art across historical and contemporary contexts.
