In 2022, Aruba Airport became the world’s first airport to receive the Green Globe Certification. Now, they’ve achieved the remarkable feat of earning the certification for the second consecutive year in 2023. The Aruba Airport Authority (AAA) integrates sustainability into every decision, using certifications as a measure of their impact on Sustainable Development Goals and global sustainability.
To secure recertification this year, AAA underwent a thorough audit, evaluating 56 criteria spanning Sustainable Management, Social/Economic, Cultural Heritage, and Environmental aspects. The audit included enhanced measures like Greenhouse Gas emissions reports, energy consumption initiatives, and updated policies. AAA’s Wings of Hope engages in annual community projects aligned with the UN’s SDGs, aiming for a positive local impact.
Green Globe CEO Birte Pelayo commends AAA for its leadership in sustainability, highlighting initiatives like organizing a Global SDG Action Week and committing to non-fossil fuel energy for ground equipment by 2030. AAA is seen as an international and Caribbean leader in sustainable airport operations.
Christine Kaarsbaan-Leo, AAA’s Sustainability & Health Manager, emphasizes the airport’s responsibility to set an example by minimizing environmental impact and making sustainable choices. She also underscores the importance of community involvement in positive projects for Aruba.
Angeline Flemming, Director of Health, Safety, and Sustainability at AAA, expresses the commitment to continuous improvement and encouraging sustainable initiatives among staff and partners. The second consecutive Green Globe Certification stands as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the AAA team, positioning them as a leading sustainable airport in the region.
