Assam introduces “tourist police” amid surge to 98.31M visitors in 2023, with Kaziranga attracting 312K, enhancing safety for all tourists.
The tourism authorities are gearing up to deploy a special “tourist police” force aimed at bolstering the security and safety of tourists, in response to the significant surge in visitor numbers to Assam following the pandemic’s peak the previous year. This initiative will include the establishment of dedicated police units, stations, and other critical facilities specifically designed to protect tourists.
Launched nationally in 2022, the initiative came to life following instructions from the federal tourism department to all states and territories to form specialized police units for tourists. This project is a joint effort with the interior ministry and the police research and development agency, focusing on creating detailed operational guidelines, designing training for tourist police, and proposing uniform standards for these officers.
Assam experienced an unprecedented influx of visitors in 2023, with 98.31 million tourists, including 98.12 million domestic and nearly 19,000 international guests, marking a record-breaking decade. The previous year, the state welcomed 17.03 million visitors, with almost all being domestic and a slight fraction from overseas.
Notably, the Kaziranga National Park alone attracted over 9,000 international and more than 300,000 domestic tourists last year, highlighting its popularity.
