The ongoing strategy aimed at expanding Athens’ presence in new markets continues to prioritize bolstering ties with the burgeoning tourist sector in India.
During December 2023, fifteen influential travel agents and journalists representing India’s tourism market visited Athens as part of a FAM trip organized by the This is Athens-Convention & Visitors Bureau of the City of Athens in partnership with the Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos, supported by Gulf Air.
These participants gained firsthand insight into Athens’ festive atmosphere and embarked on tours showcasing the city’s significant historical and contemporary cultural landmarks. They had the chance to explore Athens’ rich tourism offerings, infrastructure, relished Greek cuisine and hospitality, and discovered the array of leisure activities available during the winter months.
This visit was a concerted effort between the This is Athens-Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Athens International Airport, aiming to propel growth within India’s rapidly expanding tourism market and paving the way for establishing a direct flight route to Athens.
The FAM trip represents just one of the initiatives undertaken by the This is Athens-CVB and Athens International Airport to invigorate interest in the Indian market, including active participation at major tourism exhibitions in India like OTM India.
Epameinondas Mousios, CEO of the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency (ADDMA), highlighted, “This initiative by This is Athens and Athens International Airport aligns with the city’s endeavors to gain traction in new markets. The FAM trip provided an excellent opportunity for Indian professionals to witness Athens’ vast potential in conference tourism, leisure travel, weddings, and film productions.”
Ioanna Papadopoulou, Director of Communications & Marketing at Athens International Airport, expressed, “In the final months of 2023, a record-breaking year for both the airport and Athens in terms of traffic, we were delighted to collaborate with This is Athens-CVB in hosting representatives from the strategic Indian market. Our shared objectives and collaborative spirit are driving impactful measures to introduce the Athenian experience to the Indian market.”
This initiative was part of the “Development and Promotion of the Tourist and Cultural Identity of Athens in the post-Covid era” action, integrated into the Operational Program “Attica 2014-2020”, OPS 5104609/Subproject 1.
