In anticipation of a significant increase in drone activity and the introduction of flying taxis in the coming decade, Australia is in the process of establishing an air traffic control system specifically designed for drones. Airservices Australia, a government agency tasked with airspace management, has chosen Frequentis Australasia for the development of a digital air traffic management system.

This initiative aims to accommodate the expected rise in drone flights, projected to reach 60 million by 2043, up from the current 1.5 million annually. The surge encompasses various unmanned operations, including delivery drones and air taxis, indicating a transformative phase in Australian airspace utilization.

Luke Gumley, from Airservices Australia, emphasized the inadequacy of current air traffic control methods for the forthcoming drone influx, especially in densely populated urban areas where drone delivery services are anticipated to operate.

He pointed out the future drone management system’s reliance on significant automation, contrasting with the current verbal communication-based air traffic control. The envisioned system suggests a scenario where a single pilot could control multiple unmanned aircraft simultaneously, marking a shift towards more automated and less direct human involvement in drone operations.

The integration of this drone management system with Australia’s overall air traffic control is crucial to prevent interference with commercial flights and ensure unmanned aircraft do not collide with each other or manned aircraft. Gumley highlighted the need for strong coordination and interoperability with international standards, as adopted by the US and the European Union, to manage the finite airspace effectively, particularly around congested urban areas.

The development of a dedicated air traffic control system for drones in Australia represents a forward-thinking approach to the anticipated expansion of unmanned aircraft operations. This system is expected to have a considerable impact on tourism by facilitating the safe and efficient integration of flying taxis into the country’s transportation network, offering novel travel experiences for visitors.

Moreover, the adaptation of international standards and the introduction of new regulations for commercial drone operations will ensure that Australia remains at the forefront of aviation innovation. As flying taxis become a reality in Australian skies, alongside a dramatic increase in drone usage, this initiative will not only revolutionize air travel but also significantly boost the country’s appeal as a futuristic and accessible destination for tourists.
