The red-white-red airline is “ready for take-off” for summer 2022. The premium carrier will fly to almost 110 destinations with a weekly frequency of around 1,200 flights. Austrian Airlines is thus not only offering an attractive range of services for Austrians, but is also taking a decisive stand against the expected increase in competition from low-cost airlines. This will result in a capacity increase of ten aircraft across the Austrian route network in Europe compared to 2021.
“We fly several times a day to the most beautiful places in Europe to offer our customers an attractive flight schedule. We will now fly up to three times a day to Palma de Mallorca, expand our services to Sicily and implement further increases across the entire European network. This will give our guests even more flexibility in their travel planning. In addition, we will land up to four times a day in Milan, Stockholm, Amsterdam and Bucharest, fly to Athens and Barcelona twice a day and also offer two flights a day to Tel Aviv and Larnaca. Furthermore, we will fly up to nine times a week to Heraklion, up to six times a week to Rhodes and up to four times a week to the Greek islands of Corfu, Kos and Zakynthos,” says Austrian Airlines Chief Commercial Officer Michael Trestl, giving a first insight into the 2022 summer flight schedule. “Austrian Airlines remains the number one in Austria and differentiates itself from the competitors. We connect Austria not only with Europe, but with the whole world, offer our guests an authentic travel experience and take responsibility for our home country.” In midsummer 2021, the home carrier already recorded a 10 percent increase in the tourist segment compared to the pre-crisis year 2019. The focus on tourist destinations will also dominate the 2022 summer flight schedule. Greece, southern Italy and the Balearic Islands will again be among the fixed starters in Austrian Airlines’ route network, which will be published in mid-December.
Austrian Airlines lives responsibility
With increasing competition from low-cost airlines, dumping prices are to be expected. While low ticket prices ultimately come at the expense of employees, Austria as a business location and the environment, Austrian Airlines is committed to responsible business practices with foresight and fair working conditions. “Competition yes, but not when it becomes irrational. The dumping prices of low-cost airlines create artificial growth far in excess of real market needs. Economically, this is not transparent. And it harms the climate to the maximum,” Michael Trestl concludes.
