In a pivotal move towards environmental conservation, improved infrastructure, and sustainable tourism practices, Bali, in collaboration with Indonesian tourism authorities, is set to introduce an entry tax for all foreign tourists starting February 14.

This initiative aims to mitigate the impacts of mass tourism, address the escalating waste management issue, and ensure that the booming tourism sector benefits local communities equitably. It also seeks to encourage tourists to engage more respectfully and actively with Balinese culture.

Understanding the Bali Tourist Tax

The Bali Tourist Tax will be levied at a rate of IDR 150,000 (approximately $10) per person, applicable to all foreign visitors regardless of age. This fee is designed to fund efforts to preserve the island’s rich cultural traditions, arts, and unique natural landscapes.

How to Pay the Entry Tax

Tourists can pay the entry tax online via the official Bali Tourism Website: lovebali.baliprov.go.id. This method is recommended to avoid potential scams and ensure a hassle-free arrival. Payment can also be made upon landing at airports and harbors in Bali, though prepayment is advised for convenience.

Key Information for Foreign Tourists

Tax Exclusivity:

The entry tax is only required for visitors landing in Bali. If your travel plans in Indonesia do not include Bali, this tax does not apply.

One-time Payment:

The tax is a one-time fee. Visitors leaving and then returning to Bali within a single trip will not be charged again.

Payment Convenience:

Although payment facilities are available upon arrival, prepayment online is encouraged for a smoother entry process.

Utilization of Entry Tax Funds

The revenue from the entry tax will be dedicated to preserving Balinese customs, traditions, and arts, as well as protecting the island’s natural environment. This includes initiatives that aim to maintain Bali’s cultural and ecological integrity, thereby enriching the visitor experience.

A step towards Sustainable Tourism

The introduction of this entry tax underscores Bali’s commitment to responsible tourism and environmental stewardship. It represents a significant step in ensuring that tourism growth is both sustainable and beneficial to the island’s cultural and natural heritage. This proactive approach invites travelers to play a part in preserving the unique beauty and culture of Bali, promising a more sustainable and fulfilling experience for future generations.
