British Airways passengers are being urged to check their flight status on Friday as a “technical issue” continues to cause cancellations and delays. The Britons heading away for the Bank Holiday weekend on Thursday reported being stuck on planes on the tarmac at Heathrow Airport for nearly an hour as the BA system “crashed”.

More than 50 BA domestic and European flights departing Heathrow the airport were cancelled.

Some passengers due to leave on Friday received an email in the early hours notifying them of their cancelled flight. Others have been notified that their flight is delayed.

A statement from the British Airways released on Thursday evening said: “We’re aware of a technical issue, which we have been working hard to fix.

“Due to high call volumes please only contact us if you’re due to travel in the next 48 hours.” A tweet from British Airways at 11.27pm on Thursday said their “systems are back up and running” but there might still be “intermittent issues”.

A spokesperson from Heathrow Airport said the cancellations are not due to airport strikes. Security staff are striking from Thursday to Saturday this week.

“British Airways is currently working to resolve a technical issue with a number of its systems. We have additional Heathrow colleagues on-hand in the terminals to provide passengers with any additional assistance required,” the airport said.

Customers can receive refunds, re-book or if they have to stay overnight they will be offered meals and hotel accommodation.
