Bernardo Leon, a Public Service Assistant with the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, has been named the Employee of the Month for February 2024 at Miami International Airport. This recognition comes after Leon’s swift action in administering CPR to a passenger who had collapsed and showed no signs of vital activity. On January 15, responding to a call from MIA’s baggage claim area, Leon found a passenger seemingly lifeless. Without hesitation, he immediately dialed 911, assessed the individual’s condition, and initiated CPR. Thanks to his prompt intervention, the passenger regained consciousness after being transported to the hospital. Law enforcement officials involved in the incident credit Leon’s quick thinking and life-saving abilities for the successful outcome, acknowledging that the passenger might not have survived without his timely response.

Miami International Airport, ranked as America’s foremost hub for international cargo and the second busiest for international travelers, is undergoing a groundbreaking investment initiative. With $7 billion allocated for capital enhancements and an additional $1.7 billion designated for maintenance upgrades, MIA is poised for substantial development. Renowned for its extensive connectivity to Latin America and the Caribbean, MIA surpasses all other U.S. airports in terms of flight offerings to these regions. Moreover, it serves as the primary economic driver for Miami-Dade County and the entire state of Florida, contributing a staggering $31.9 billion in business revenue annually. Notably, MIA accounts for approximately 60 percent of all international visitors to Florida each year, cementing its pivotal role in the state’s tourism sector.
