The South African Remote Work Visitor Visa will still be offered in September 2026, providing the means for certain foreign nationals to legally reside in South Africa and work remotely for an employer in another country. This visa falls under the broader umbrella of immigration policies in the country designed to attract international skills, international expenditure and international visitors that do not involve remote workers entering South Africa’s domestic job market. Nevertheless, the requirements for the visa are more detailed than those of the general digital nomad entry permit. Foreign nationals applying for the visa have to prove their employment in another country, income levels, as well as compliance with South African tax laws where necessary. The Department of Home Affairs launched the visa policy in October 2024.

The R650,796 Income Requirement Remains Central

One important clarification for September 2026 concerns the income threshold.

The Department of Home Affairs’ published remote-work visa requirements specify a gross salary of at least R650,796 per year, supported by three months of bank statements. That works out to approximately R54,233 per month.

This is broadly around the US$3,000 monthly level depending on the exchange rate, but the official requirement is expressed in South African rand on an annual basis, not as a fixed US-dollar threshold.

Applicants should therefore prepare evidence against the rand-denominated requirement rather than relying on an approximate dollar conversion.

Foreign Employment Must Be Clearly Documented

Remote workers applying under the framework need a valid employment contract signed by the applicant and the foreign-based employer.

The visa is designed for people whose employment is connected to a company outside South Africa. The documentation therefore needs to establish both the employment relationship and the purpose and duration of the intended stay.

Applicants must also provide a valid passport, proof of financial means, a return flight ticket or reservation and proof of payment of the applicable visa fee. A yellow fever vaccination certificate may also be required for travellers arriving from or transiting through a yellow-fever endemic area, subject to the stated exceptions.

Tax Compliance Becomes Important During Longer Stays

Tax is one of the most important parts of the remote-work framework, particularly for people planning to remain in South Africa for extended periods.

The Department of Home Affairs states that a remote-work visa holder who is tax resident in a country with which South Africa has an applicable double-taxation agreement must register with the South African Revenue Service if present in South Africa for more than 183 days in aggregate during 12 months.

For a recipient who is not tax resident in a country covered by the relevant double-taxation arrangement, the published requirements state that registration with SARS is required.

This means remote workers planning an extended stay in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban or elsewhere should consider their tax position before reaching the relevant stay thresholds.

September 2026 Brings Fresh Tax-System Developments

There are also wider tax-system developments in September 2026 that remote workers should be aware of.

On September 23, SARS announced enhancements to its systems for implementing amendments to the OECD Common Reporting Standard, including stronger tax-identification information and improved data quality. SARS said the changes would support compliance monitoring and the identification of offshore tax non-compliance.

That announcement does not establish a new remote-worker income threshold or prove that border officials have begun universally checking foreign tax registrations. It does, however, show that South Africa’s tax-information infrastructure is continuing to develop during 2026.

The March 2026 Immigration Policy Update Matters Too

South Africa’s Cabinet-approved revised White Paper on Citizenship, Immigration and Refugee Protection, published in March 2026, continues to recognise the remote-work visa as part of the country’s immigration reforms.

The document states that the remote-work visa permits foreign nationals working remotely for foreign employers to reside in South Africa for periods of up to 36 months, subject to the relevant requirements.

The same policy framework places the remote-work visa within a wider strategy designed to modernise immigration processes and attract international skills while supporting economic activity.

What Remote Workers Can Do in September 2026

For an eligible international remote worker, South Africa offers the possibility of combining extended residence with travel across several distinct regions.

Cape Town provides access to beaches, mountain landscapes, wine regions and a large international airport. Johannesburg offers a major business and commercial environment, while Durban combines a subtropical coastline with access to KwaZulu-Natal’s wider tourism attractions.

Remote workers can also use longer stays to explore the Garden Route, Kruger National Park, the Drakensberg and other destinations during periods away from their normal working schedule.

The visa does not automatically authorise employment for a South African company. Its purpose is tied to remote work for a foreign employer under the prescribed framework.

Travellers Should Separate Tourism From Remote Work

Those individuals who have made plans for travel in order to take a holiday vacation do not require a remote work visa because all they are going to do while visiting South Africa is use a computer. Nevertheless, the type of visa one is going to apply for will depend on the purpose of the visit, the duration of the visit and the conditions under which the visit will take place. In cases where individuals are planning on working remotely in South Africa for an overseas employer for a long time, remote work visas should be considered.

Since July 1st, all those travelling to or from the country have been mandated to submit an online traveller declaration prior to travel with some exceptions for paper forms. As far as September 2026 is concerned, the situation is thus very clear: the remote work visa will still be obtainable, the published income criteria will still amount to R650,796 gross per annum, foreign work documents will still be critical, and taxation will be even more crucial where longer durations are considered. There is absolutely no proof provided by any official document regarding a new requirement for September 2026 whereby all remote workers are mandated to present foreign tax registration or a $3,000 monthly income.
