The Bomber Command Centre in Canwick Avenue, located close to Lincoln, has been selected for VisitEngland’s huge visitor attraction for the category of 2023.
It is in a difficult situation with Warner Bros. Studio Tour and Blenheim Palace London.
The chief executive of the IBCC, Nicky van Der Drift, stated that she was happy that the attraction had been acknowledged.
In April 2018, the centre opened after fundraising for years. A metal spire is at its heart which is the tallest war memorial in the UK, standing 102ft high. Curved metal walls are around the memorial, listing the names of RAF bomber personnel who lost their lives during World War Two.
As the site of the IBCC, Lincolnshire was selected due to the fact that 27 RAF Bomber Command stations were based in the county during the war.
Ms van Der Drift while commenting on the nomination said that they’ve been opened for five years only and due to COVID, were closed for 18 months.
Therefore, it’s just a nod to the fervor and devotion of the staffs and volunteers associated.
They are so dedicated to making this the top it can be and that’s clearly been picked up.
She also mentioned that Lincolnshire had so much to give to others and it was significant to be able to “fly the flag” on a national stage for the county.
