In a distant area of North Kashmir, at a stone’s throw distance from the famous Line of Control, in a village of 10,000 residents, bunkers are getting replaced or converted into homestays as tourists make a beeline to get an exclusive sight of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, across the river.

After seeing years of military stand-offs between the two countries, India, and Pakistan, marked by cross-border penetration and gunfire, Keran village located in Kupwara district, J&K, has recently seen homestays and several tents popping up on the banks of the Kishanganga. This river bank is also called the Neelam River. This new trend is indicative of a bigger push by the administration of Jammu and Kashmir to improve tourism and take it beyond the predictable areas.

Beforehand, access to these J&K villages in the border area was limited only to the military and the locals. However, after the signing of the ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and India in February 2021, the
administration of J&K has decided to permit visitors into these core areas.
