Nepal Tourism Growth Accelerates As Thakurbaba revives 83 big has of abandoned land with new lake, parks and attractions.

Nepal’s Thakurbaba Municipality in the Bardiya district is set to leverage its tourism potential by developing a new tourist spot on 83 big has of abandoned land. The new tourist spot will have a multipurpose lake, picnics spot, parks, and other tourism infrastructure. The new attraction is expected to bring much-needed tourism to the locality and promote the area to be a major tourism hub attracting the maximum number of tourists and also making people stay longer in Bardiya while exploring the tourism sites.

Thakurbaba Begins Historic Transformation Of Unused Land Into Tourism Hub

Thakurbaba Municipality has started preparations to develop tourism infrastructure on land that remained unused for many years. The large area, located in Bargada of Thakurbaba Municipality-4 in Bardiya, had significant potential due to its location near one of Nepal’s important tourism regions.

For years, the land remained vacant and did not contribute to local development. The property also faced issues related to occupation by local residents. It was later brought under government control through the land reform programme after exceeding the permitted landholding limit.

Although the government acquired the land, it remained without registration under any individual’s ownership for a long period. After continuous efforts, the property has now been brought under the ownership of the Nepal government, creating an opportunity for planned public development.

With the land now under government ownership, the municipality has moved forward with procedures to obtain it on lease. The completion of this process will allow the local authority to begin construction and development activities aimed at creating a new tourism destination.

Massive Tourism Plan Includes Lake Parks And Visitor Facilities

The municipality has prepared an ambitious plan to transform the unused land into a recreational and tourism zone. The project will include a large multipurpose lake, green spaces, parks, picnic areas and other facilities designed for visitors.

Around 48 big has of the total 83 big has of land will be dedicated to the construction of the multipurpose lake. The remaining area will be developed with additional tourism infrastructure to provide recreational experiences for travellers.

The lake is expected to become the centrepiece of the development, offering visitors a peaceful environment while adding a new attraction to Bardiya’s tourism landscape. The surrounding facilities will provide spaces for relaxation, family activities and leisure experiences.

The project is designed to create a destination where tourists can spend more time in Thakurbaba rather than making only short visits to nearby attractions. By increasing visitor activities, the municipality aims to strengthen tourism engagement in the area.

New Attraction To Expand Bardiya Tourism Beyond Wildlife Visits

Bardiya is widely recognised for its natural beauty and wildlife tourism opportunities, with many visitors travelling to the region to explore its national park. However, tourism authorities are increasingly focusing on creating additional attractions that can extend visitor stays and increase local benefits.

The new Thakurbaba tourism project has been planned to complement the existing attractions of Bardiya National Park. The municipality aims to encourage visitors entering through the western part of the area to explore additional destinations towards the eastern side.

The development of new recreational facilities is expected to create a broader tourism experience by combining nature-based travel with leisure activities. Visitors will have more options to enjoy the region, increasing the possibility of longer stays and higher spending in the local economy.

The project also reflects a wider effort to develop tourism infrastructure in emerging destinations and reduce dependence on only traditional tourist attractions.

Tourism Infrastructure Expected To Boost Local Economy

The development of the lake, parks and other facilities is expected to bring economic benefits to communities surrounding Thakurbaba. Increased visitor activity could create opportunities for local businesses and support employment growth.

Tourism-related sectors such as accommodation services, transportation, local products and visitor services may benefit from higher demand after the completion of the project.

The municipality expects the new destination to generate both direct and indirect employment opportunities. Construction activities will create short-term opportunities, while the operation of tourism facilities could provide long-term economic benefits for residents.

By turning unused land into a productive tourism asset, the project aims to support sustainable local development and create a stronger connection between tourism growth and community prosperity.

Major Investment Proposal Could Accelerate Development

The municipality is also working with international organisations to support tourism infrastructure development in the area. A proposal has been prepared for major financial support to help develop the planned facilities.

The proposed investment is estimated at around Rs. 1 billion. However, the project is still awaiting further progress before moving into the implementation phase.

If approved, the investment could significantly accelerate the construction of tourism facilities and help establish Thakurbaba as a new attraction in Bardiya.

The proposed funding would support the creation of infrastructure required to welcome more visitors and improve the overall tourism experience. It could also strengthen the municipality’s long-term vision of developing a modern recreational destination.

Thakurbaba Aims To Create A New Future For Bardiya Tourism

The transformation of 83 big has of abandoned land represents a major opportunity for Thakurbaba Municipality and the wider Bardiya region. The planned tourism infrastructure could convert a previously unused area into a valuable destination that attracts visitors throughout the year.

The multipurpose lake, parks, picnic areas and other facilities are expected to add a new dimension to Bardiya’s tourism offerings. The project will not only provide new attractions for travellers but also support economic activities and employment opportunities for local communities.

Nepal Tourism Growth Accelerates As Thakurbaba revives 83 big has of abandoned land in Bardiya by developing a multipurpose lake, parks and visitor facilities. The project aims to attract more travellers, extend stays and strengthen local tourism through new recreational attractions.

As Nepal continues to develop new tourism destinations, Thakurbaba’s ambitious plan highlights the growing importance of improving infrastructure and creating diverse visitor experiences. By reviving unused land and transforming it into a tourism hub, the municipality aims to strengthen Bardiya’s position as an attractive destination for travellers seeking nature, relaxation and unique experiences.
