Canada is expanding its efforts to attract major global conferences and international business events through new federal tourism funding aimed at strengthening the country’s competitiveness in the global meetings and conventions industry. The Canadian government recently confirmed additional financial support for the International Convention Attraction Fund (ICAF), a program designed to help Canadian destinations secure large-scale international events that generate tourism spending, support local businesses, and create long-term economic opportunities.

The initiative highlights Canada’s growing focus on year-round tourism development and business travel expansion. Government officials and tourism leaders believe that attracting international conferences not only boosts hotel occupancy and restaurant spending but also increases global visibility for Canadian cities and industries.

Federal Government Announces New Tourism Investment

The Government of Canada announced an additional investment of $15 million over the next three years for the International Convention Attraction Fund. The announcement was made in Toronto by the Honourable Rechie Valdez, Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State for Small Business and Tourism, alongside other government representatives and Destination Canada officials.

The funding program is administered by Destination Canada, the country’s national tourism organization responsible for promoting Canada as a leading global travel and business events destination. The renewed investment aims to strengthen bids from Canadian cities competing to host major international conferences, conventions, and industry gatherings.

Government officials stated that business events play a major role in supporting tourism-related industries by attracting high-value international visitors who spend significantly more than traditional leisure travelers. These visitors contribute to local economies through hotels, restaurants, transportation services, entertainment venues, and retail businesses.

International Convention Attraction Fund Delivers Strong Results

The International Convention Attraction Fund was first introduced in March 2024 to help Canadian destinations compete for global events linked to key economic sectors and national priorities. Since its launch, the program has helped Canada secure numerous international conferences and conventions across different provinces.

According to government data, the program has already supported 116 international events expected to attract more than 324,000 attendees. These events are projected to generate over $803 million in direct economic impact for local communities and tourism businesses nationwide.

Several major international conferences have already been confirmed through the program, including the 2025 International Symposium on Avian Influenza in St. John’s, the 2025 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Toronto, the 2027 World Road Congress in Vancouver, the 2028 World Conference on Earthquake Engineering in Montréal, and the 2028 International Geological Congress in Calgary.

These events are expected to bring thousands of international delegates, researchers, industry leaders, and business travelers to Canada over the coming years.

Business Tourism Supports Canada’s Economy

Canadian tourism officials continue to emphasize the importance of business events as a major driver of economic growth. Unlike traditional vacation travelers, business event delegates typically spend more on accommodation, dining, transportation, and local experiences during their visits.

The tourism sector currently supports more than 2.1 million jobs across Canada and contributes significantly to local economies in both major cities and smaller communities. In 2025, Canada’s tourism industry generated approximately $133 billion in visitor spending while supporting more than 280,000 businesses across 5,000 communities nationwide.

Government forecasts suggest tourism revenues could reach $177 billion by 2030 as Canada continues investing in international tourism promotion and global business event opportunities.

Officials also noted that conferences and conventions help strengthen Canada’s position in important sectors including life sciences, digital industries, finance, natural resources, agribusiness, and advanced manufacturing. These events encourage international collaboration, investment opportunities, and trade development while promoting Canadian innovation on the global stage.

Destination Canada Focuses on Global Competitiveness

Destination Canada stated that the new funding will help the country remain competitive against other major international convention destinations. Tourism leaders believe Canada’s modern infrastructure, multicultural cities, convention facilities, and strong global reputation provide advantages when bidding for large-scale international events.

The organization also highlighted the strong return on investment generated through tourism promotion initiatives. According to Destination Canada, every dollar invested in its activities produces nearly $24 in economic impact for the country.

Tourism experts expect the expanded funding to support long-term growth in Canada’s meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions sector while helping destinations attract year-round international visitors beyond traditional leisure tourism seasons.

With continued federal support and rising international demand for global business events, Canada is positioning itself as one of the world’s leading destinations for conferences, conventions, and international tourism development.
