Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the largest cruise operator globally, announced its progression towards an 18% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity based on lower berth capacity in 2024, approaching its 20% reduction target set for 2030. By the end of this year, the corporation anticipates a 42% reduction in GHG emission intensity from its 2008 baseline. This performance is expected to surpass the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) carbon intensity reduction goals for 2030.

Following a decision to fast-track its 2030 GHG intensity reduction aim to a 20% decrease by 2026, Carnival Corporation has managed to reduce total GHG emissions by over 10% from its highest in 2011, despite a 30% increase in capacity. This has been achieved through consistent efforts to enhance energy efficiency, minimize fuel consumption, and employ technologies and fuels that emit fewer emissions.

Strategies for Reduction

Carnival Corporation has adopted a dual approach to achieve these significant emissions reductions:

  1. Fuel Efficiency Initiatives: The corporation has focused on identifying opportunities to save energy and reduce fuel consumption, leading to the implementation of various fuel and energy-saving innovations. Efforts include upgrading the fleet with advanced technology packages for better HVAC systems, LED and smart lighting, and remote monitoring improvements, optimizing hull designs and coatings for fuel efficiency, developing energy-efficient itineraries, utilizing shoreside electric power when docked, and installing Air Lubrication Systems for reduced fuel consumption.
  2. Emission Reductions and Alternative Fuels: With the current lack of broadly available zero-emission maritime fuels, Carnival Corporation has sought to lower emissions from existing fuels while exploring lower-emission alternatives and new technologies. This includes operating nine Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) capable ships, with two more on order, to achieve immediate GHG reductions, employing Advanced Air Quality Systems to clean ships’ exhaust, and experimenting with innovative fuel technologies like lithium-ion battery storage, hydrogen-powered fuel cells, and biofuels as replacements for fossil fuels.

Environmental Commitment

Carnival Corporation remains dedicated to its long-standing commitment to environmental protection, focusing on reducing GHG emissions from its operations and aiming for net zero emissions from ship operations by 2050. This aligns with its broader sustainability vision and leadership in promoting sustainable cruising practices.
