The Center is considering making Chennai the hub for cruise tourism on the East Coast. This was said by SarbanandaSonowal,the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
Taking place for the first time in Chennai Port history, anuninterrupted cruise facility was performed from last yearJune to September, statedMr.Sonowal.
Mr.Sonowalevaluated the presentation of the Chennai Port Trust along with its subsidiary Kamarajar Port Ltd.comprising senior representativesas well asSunil Paliwal,the chairperson of the ports.
Mr.Sonowalsaid that they are going to make Chennai Port a cruise tourism center in the East Coast.
Chennai Port and Cordelia Cruises inkedan agreement in May last yearfor promoting cruise tourism.
Mr.Sonowal said that in the last few years,87,000 passengers from 37 cruise tourism operators came tothe Chennai Port.
Paliwalstatedthat container ferry facilities between Chennai and Puducherrystarted in a minor way with containers being the chieffreight.
Regarding the Chennai-Maduravoyal elevated corridor scheme,Mr.Sonowal said that it is anticipated to be bestowed in June this year. This project has been revitalized by the union government for easing traffic bottleneck at the Chennai Port.
The National Highways Authority of India along with the Chennai Port and the Tamil Nadu government and the Indian Navy are working togetherfor making this project a reality.
Mr.Sonowalassessed the working of the National Institute of Siddha and Central Council for Research in Siddha. He also initiated a Siddha herbal plant and millets expo in Chennai.
