Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has announced that its main runway 09/27 and the auxiliary runway 14/32 will be closed temporarily on May 9, 2024, for pre-monsoon maintenance. The closure, set for 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, is part of CSMIA’s annual monsoon readiness plan. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has been issued to ensure improved runway resilience during the rainy season. Normal operations will resume after 5:00 PM on the same day.

The airport, covering approximately 1033 acres including runways, taxiways, and aprons, recognizes the critical need for regular checks and repairs to maintain functionality and safety. The annual maintenance routine involves engineering experts and airside teams assessing and repairing any wear and tear on the runway surfaces to prevent issues like waterlogging and ensure safe aircraft operations during the monsoon.

Specifically, runways 09-27 and 14-32, measuring 3448 meters by 60 meters and 2871 meters by 45 meters respectively, undergo thorough inspections to extend their durability. This maintenance addresses potential damage from regular operations and aims to guarantee safe landings and takeoffs.

CSMIA’s monsoon contingency strategy is a proactive measure to manage challenges that adverse weather may pose, ensuring continuous operations. The airport utilizes advanced technology to oversee the maintenance efficiently within the scheduled six hours.

In planning these works, CSMIA collaborates closely with airlines and aviation authorities, having notified all stakeholders six months in advance to minimize passenger inconvenience. This coordination allows airlines to adjust their flight schedules effectively.

Through these measures, CSMIA demonstrates its commitment to maintaining high safety, efficiency, and reliability standards, ensuring that both airlines and passengers experience minimal disruption and continue to enjoy smooth service.
