From pioneering technologies to community-driven projects, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has implemented a range of initiatives aimed at advancing sustainable water management practices throughout its operations and aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

CSMIA has proactively implemented measures to monitor and control its water usage. During the fiscal year 2022-23, the airport utilized around 8,79,811 megalitres of water, recycling 2,92,861 megalitres, which constituted 33% of its total consumption. In the following fiscal year 2023-24, CSMIA consumed approximately 8,36,393 megalitres of water [YTD], recycling 3,51,724 megalitres, amounting to 42% of total water consumption [YTD].

To reduce water usage and promote recycling, CSMIA has introduced various initiatives. Installation of waterless urinals across both terminals has notably decreased water consumption, resulting in significant savings. Additionally, water flow reducers in water closets’ jet sprays have halved water usage for various purposes, while tap aerators in washbasins have reduced water usage by 40%. Sensor taps have further contributed to water conservation, saving approximately one-third of water consumption per use.

CSMIA has also implemented innovative solutions for efficient water usage in landscaping. Drip irrigation systems in Terminal 2’s green areas distribute water to plants effectively, minimizing wastage. The airport repurposes treated sewage for flushing and cooling within terminal buildings, reducing freshwater demand and wastewater discharge. Rainwater harvesting infrastructure has been enhanced, with strategically placed rainwater pits across the airside and terminal buildings to recharge the groundwater table.

Furthermore, CSMIA has collaborated with the NGO Hariyali on an afforestation project in Tetavali village since 2017. A dam with three water holding bunds has been constructed, holding approximately 3.5 lakh litres of water. This harvested water, totaling around 24.5 lakh litres, supports various purposes in the degraded forest area, contributing to ecosystem restoration and water conservation.

CSMIA is dedicated to water conservation and management, guided by a commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Acknowledging its position as one of India’s busiest airports, CSMIA emphasizes the responsible management of water resources to minimize environmental impact while satisfying stakeholders’ requirements. Through continual endeavors and investments in sustainable infrastructure and practices, CSMIA strives to establish pioneering benchmarks in water conservation across the aviation sector, nurturing a more sustainable future.
