In an innovative bid to enchant international visitors, Cambodia is setting the stage for an extraordinary welcome. Prime Minister Hun Manet has proposed that traditional Chhay Yam dance performances greet travelers at the nation’s international airports during the auspicious period of the Khmer New Year in mid-April. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to bolster the allure of Cambodia as a prime tourist destination, particularly emphasizing the cultural and historical richness that the country has to offer.
At the helm of the 8th River Festival held in Siem Reap town, themed “River for Peace and Development,” from March 15-17, Manet underscored the province’s significant role in the national tourism landscape, home to the iconic Angkor Wat. The festival, aligned with the “Visit Siem Reap 2024” campaign, sought to showcase Siem Reap’s tourism potential amidst a backdrop of recovery in the tourism sector. Despite notable progress, Manet emphasized the need for ongoing efforts to elevate Siem Reap’s visibility on the global tourism map.
To further this cause, Manet suggested the incorporation of the Chhay Yam dance, a vibrant and traditional Cambodian performance, as a welcoming gesture for international tourists arriving at Cambodian airports. Recalling his own experience of being greeted by a Chhay Yam troupe, he envisioned this cultural presentation as a lasting memory for visitors, enriching their arrival with a taste of Cambodia’s rich cultural tapestry. This initiative aims to extend beyond Siem Reap, reaching other provinces and the capital, Phnom Penh, to create a unified and memorable welcome for tourists nationwide.
The River Festival itself was a testament to Cambodia’s commitment to cultural preservation and tourism promotion, drawing tens of thousands to Siem Reap. According to Siem Reap provincial deputy governor, the festival featured a blend of traditional performances, cultural events, modern concerts, sports, and various exhibitions, underscoring the province’s diverse cultural heritage and modern vibrancy.
