At present, in Thailand, Chiang Mai is experience the fourth-highest daily infections in the country. As per today’s figures, 357 people got affected; international tourism had hardly bounced back since the country reopened 2 weeks back. On the province, the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic has been estimated to have lost tourism revenue as high as 70 billion baht. Chiang Mai is expecting that the reopening of the country will bring relief to some extent.

The Chiang Mai Tourism Council considers the arrival of a chartered golf tourism flight from South Korea with around 83 passengers as a vote of confidence for the “Charming Chiang Mai” program. This program aims to welcome back international tourists in a safe manner. They expect it shows that the province is all prepared to maintain health and safety protocols and protect incoming tourists. The Tourism Council mentioned that public safety will always be prioritized and businesses will stay flexible to account for the complications of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The president of the Tourism Council is quite sure that more and more group tours and travellers will return to Chiang Mai, giving that much edge to the tourism industry with international revenue after a nearly 2-year drought. But all signs point to the tourism sector being carried heavily by domestic travellers for the time being.

Hotel bookings have increased since the beginning of October as domestic tourists have rushed to natural tourists sites where hotel bookings reached 50 to 60% occupancy at times, whereas Chiang Mai town increased as well, but only to about 35%.
